Braille parallel parking--is it okay?

I was looking through a thread in a forum frequented mostly by San Francisco people that asked if it's okay to bump someone's bumper while parallel parking, and to my (slight) shock everyone said that it was perfectly okay.

I grew up in the suburbs and lived in LA for a while, and if someone hit the bumper of even the crappiest of cars, there would be hell to pay.

What are your thoughts?

I grew up in the suburbs and was basically brought up the same way - if you hitting a car no matter what isn't a good thing. But I now go to college in the city and see all too frequently people hitting other cars while parking and not thinking a second about it

Well I think technically the bumper is supposed to absorb minor impacts without any damage... and I know this does happen daily. I guess the thinking is no harm (damage) no foul.

Personally I've never done it, never will, and would be very pissed if I saw someone hit my car regardless of how soft of a tap it was.

Here in downtown Chicago it is expected.

To bastardize a movie quote: "Rubbin's parkin'"

Sure, go ahead and hit my bumper silly. Oh and don't worry about the chipped paint....that's what insurance is for. :D While you're at it slash my tires will ya? :disgust:

(guess you can see my view on this subject.)

Yep, I have to parallel park often in Chicago, and sometimes spaces are so tiny you can't get in without bumping of the cars. Sometimes I have to back up and move forward over 10 times just to squeeze in, but such is life.

In big cities, I don't think most people really care. Guess it just depends on where you are. If you're doing that in Athens, GA you'll probably have someone ready to fight. Do it in NYC, they wont even look twice at you.

I live in Chicago. Personally I don't tap anyone's car. But if i did tap someone's car, or if someone tapped mine.... as long as there's no dents I wouldn't think twice about it. You're not going to park on city streets and have your car go untouched, so it's useless to get all huffy about it.

I guess Portland has bigger spaces or something, but I'd say its a good way to get your ass kicked around here.

Probably should stick to public trans if you can't keep you rig off other vehicles.

I believe that it would be practical in the daytime, in a location where there's fewer vehicles around. It's not easy to park where there's so many cars around, so it's tougher.

I think it pretty much depends on weather you live in a crowded city or not. Getting into a tight spot can mean the difference between a 2 minute walk and a 10 minute walk so people tend to push their luck on parking more.

I know that I get frustrated when the college kids come back and the parking goes from 5 cars at the side of the building to 4 cars...you shouldn't need that much extra space per car....

Getting off topic, but yeah it seems to depend on the parking situation in the city you're in.

If it was an eye for an eye, you'd dent his car, not his face.

Sounds like an ego thing to me, not exactly mature.

2.5MPH, though some manufacturers build to a higher standard (5MPH). That's for "no structural damage" because even little bumps can leave scrapes and swap colors.

i thought this was about blind people parallel parking.... don't think it's ok, but then I guess it is expected, that would explain why the cars in nyc have that extra thing on their bumpers
