You're doing a Heck of a Job here, Pattie!

If the Obama administration had taken over the drill site on day one, you'd be bitching about them sidelining the BP experts, who you would assure us would have stopped the leak in a few hours.

Like I originally said, wait and see.
At some point the federal government can see that BP is incapable of doing the job of fixing the problem and at that point it is time to step in.

interesting...so I don't expect you to complain about not nuking the site from orbit on day 1 anymore.

Sadly .. the feds set the precedent on being incapable of holding Big Oil accountable for anything...

So the government tells people to leave and they don't and then bitch because the government doesn't came and rescue them is as bad as allowing this oil fiasco to go on for a month?
Are you kidding me?

If consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, yours must be a great mind indeed.

There is a lot of variables in doing something like this. This would be a last resort. Think about it. Do we even have a nuclear device that can survive the pressure at 5000 feet long enough to initiate? This isn't Abyss. There is a lot of procedures for using a nuclear device. Not even talking about the international outcry for setting of a nuke, even for peaceful purposes. We would be thumbing or noses at the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban treaty. Yes I know that the treaty has been ratified. It isn't like Obama can just pick up the phone and go tell the navy to drop a nuclear device in the Gulf of Mexico. There is just way to much room for things to go wrong with doing this.

You're missing the whole danger that a number of other engineers pointed out about nuking: you might collapse the hole and release and even bigger plume, or even worse you might end up collapsing a good portion of the sea bed in that area and release a good chunk of the oil deposit all at once.

Don't these folks realize that if that was a viable option, it would already have been used?

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle testified to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday about the potential danger of using Corexit.
This is quite possibly the most humorous line ever to appear on these forums. What it says about our government, though, is quite sad and depressing. Reminds me of the days when actors testified about food safety. In an amazing coincidence the Democrats ran Congress then too.

Yeah an oceanographer with a degree from duke is like an actor. She has no idea about oceans and shouldnt be talking to congress.

They should be talking to cyclowizard. After all he has read 3 pdf files and has come to the conclusion we can drink the dispersant.

The problem with using a nuke in this manner on this leak, is that first there are multiple leaks (which would require multiple blasts or a larger bomb depending on how close together the leaks are). Secondly, there are concerns that a nuclear detonation could facture the rock more (which we know the rock fractures already as their drill bit got stuck and rock factured a few weeks prior to the spill). Detonating a nuclear weapon to seal the leaks could just have easily created an even larger leak that we couldn't stop by drilling relief wells.

Three leaks??? I thought it was just one hole in the ground and that the pipe had 3 leaks. Therefore I would guess the smart thing to do, if using a nuke is smart, would be to blow the hole in the ground up.

I'm glad you abandon the discussion we were having only to come here and throw cheap insults. I suppose that having an honest discussion is beyond the scope of your mental abilities.

edit: Even better, you insulted me in the same post where you call out someone else for complaining about Earle. I have a PhD in chemical engineering and she has a PhD in botany. Guess who has more experience with chemical safety? Mouthbreather.

Given that your IQ is barely breaking the double-digit barrier, I would have thought you'd be a bit more sensitive. Unfortunately, it looks like it takes both of your brain cells to express your stupidity. Fortunately, it has now been laid bare in numerous threads for the entire internet to see. Unfortunately, you live too far away for me to explain it in a way that you might understand. :D

wait wait wait lmao... Are you saying congress should be talking to you instead of her. Oh man cyclo You should tell them you need to talk to them. Do you have a wiki page too? :D

at any rate I think given the seriousness of the issue they should talk to both you and her :awe:

The oil is under a huge amount of pressure. It's not like you can blow it up and expect the rubble to seal the hole. The only possible use for an explosion is crimping the well piping, and why would you use a nuclear explosion?

Problem would have been solved immediately, now it's over a month completely destroying the Gulf, what do you think?

No, really.. It is impossible for me to fathom the mind of someone who would want to nuke an oil spill. It has to be a big fucking joke. There is no reasonable explanation as no one could be that retarded.

IF it stopped the leak immediately the radiation issue would have had less impact than the oil has had so far... but not only would it working be powerfully unlikely it would render subsequent attempts to fix it nearly impossible for days at a time.. throw a second one at it and we may as well have left it alone...

Explosions can seal things in some situations (of course they can make them much worse in others)... but to advocate a nuke instead of conventional explosives is beyond asinine, it has to be a joke.

On that topic though... if there are actually politicians that think it is a good idea could you send me a link.. I work in the nuclear field and would LOVE to have a video to show some folks at work.

Aw, the poor little "progressive" has to make fun of handicap kids to try and make his point. Isn't that cute.

Its ok patranus. I'm neither poor or little and as far as progressive the biggest thing on my mind is getting smoking banned in Beverly hills so I can sit on restaurant patios this summer. ():)

Ah. So you don't like something so you are going to try and get it banned.
I hope you remember that when something you want is banned by the evil politicians.
