I read about this in the NY Times yesterday. It will become operational this fall. The government needs to stop it. The company, with countless violations, simply cannot be trusted.

This is why folks who are always screaming for "more regulation!" are wrong - quite frankly, private companies are smarter than those in government who would pass the laws, those who would perform the regulation, and the voters who support both of them.

Read about this yesterday.

I find it extremely ODD that you post about a company doing all it evilly can to circumvent the regulations we do have and conclude that our answer should be less regulation of these mofos and not stricter, more comprehensive regulation.

Example: We formulate a "regulation" that home invaders can't breach the front door of your home and shoot you, fuck your wife and steal your shit.

The fuckers come in the back door instead.

Your response: WELL, obviously they're smarter than we are, let's not even bother to stop them at all anymore!

How fucking stupid a reaction is that?

Cool. Should be interesting to see how well the current technology can handle the stresses of the lateral hole section. I would hate to lose a BHA in that well. Also, in some parts of the north slope, they do build "little islands" for the drilling rigs. Probably not to the extreme of this BP job.

But in a more serious fashion, if they had approval from the appropriate agencies to begin the construction of the "island" and to put an oil rig in place, who are we to blame? BP probably followed the necessary steps to permitted and approved. If they didn't well then thats ballsy thing to do. And if its a regulatory oversight, its a good thing the MMS is being restructured in to the Bureau of what ever to deal with this.

You know you just have to wonder what kind of above the law, aristocratic entitled fuckers run this company. With Mr. Tony "I just want get on with my Yacht racing life" Hayward as he turnes US waters into the black sea and now wants to skirt the law within same waters doing even more dangerous drilling. Drilling where they can't stop accidents. Is it like a branch of East India Company?

Are you referring to OSHA violations? How about Incidents of Non-Compliance related to their offshore operations? Two very different different things.

Excuse Me.. I guess you are in support of a corporation as irresponsible as BP thinking it is OK to break the rules of this pussified nation...

What they are doing is nearly an act of war.. ESPECIALLY considering what they just did to our Southern COASTLINE

First show me what rules BP has broken as far as regs go. It appears the MMS pretty approved the drill plan and that bp has used a similar drill plan on other operations. I will hold judgement on bp until all the facts get in.

But people work around regulations all the time. It is reality and no amount of regulation will change that.

I would say the fed is being equally incompetent in its response as well.

It is NOT their oil... IT was a loophole that CAUSED THE GULF... this is disgusting

Just like all that oil flowing in the Gulf.. pfft.. not theirs..It belongs to you and me... they pay if they refine it and make a profit

did you read about the 50+ billion given to the oil corps recently by way of not charging them royalties on YOUR oil

Had they had to pay those $50b, it would have been a cost of doing business and that would have largely been passed onto the consumer. THere is no free lunch.

As far as summer gas prices, usage go up in the summer. Maybe you should have congress repeal the laws of supply and demand.

That's not a very good analogy, that's not regulation, that's criminal activity.

Maybe we should never have allowed Corporations to get the oil.. Personally.. a country as large as the USA should NEVER allow another nation or corporation to drill our oil. We have the resources to go to the moon.. nuke hiroshima.. take over iraq and afghanistan .. yet we can't build an oil well?

You are part of the problem.. thinking and supporting BP and corporations that are too big and powerful. No piece of history should ever repeat a page where corporations own the government that is by and for the people

Costs associated with summer gas do not increase but the price does tremendously and they rape us over and over .. huh.. rape us.. yes.. by buying legislation and buying people like you

using the word "people" when referring to a corporation

acting non-chalant when explaining how irresponsible corporations like BP just get around regulations like people do

they are not people

6 billion profit in one quarter.. and they still tell you and me and all the voters in this great nation we are bitch ass punks and that they will exploit anything they want when it comes to sticking their dicks in our oil

Ironically, it's your ideology that's allowed this to happen. The idea that we can have a powerful government to protect consumers from business has failed. The result is that those businesses use this powerful government to protect themselves from consumers. We've traded economic liberty for economic security and now we have neither.

Well if you want a state run oil company maybe you should look at how pemex handled its gulf blowout in 1979. State run oil companies are typically not the panacea you are looking for.

6 billion in profit in a qtr, good for them. They should be able to clean up this mess.

Yes regulation is often used to reduce competition.

Does anyone want to dare ask the question who approved them to build an island and drill on it? I can't even change a faucet in my house without getting a permit from the government, I doubt it was as simple as building an island and plopping a rig down on it. You want more regulations? It's not that there aren't enough regulations, stupid, it's the fact that BP WRITES the regulations.

New rules have already been put in place for this BP operation.

It must meet the offshore rig requirements.
