I'm fairly sure this is a repost, but then.... it could have been slashdot.

I gladly donated $5 to the boyscouts yesterday who were selling popcorn outside of a Lowes. I sat there and BS'ed with one of the kids for a few minutes and he told me about all of the summer camps he had been to with his troop. We had been to some of the same places (of course, it was a lot longer ago for me) :)

Man, I have a lot of respect for the boyscouts. Who cares about how the national organiation sells out to the MPAA/RIAA. The local troops and local leaders are where the tires hit the pavement. Trust me, this is registering a 0.00 on their "give-a-******-o-meter". They have more important things to worry about, like which trail to take to get up the mountain, low impact camping and how they're going to cook dinner

Kinda lame to have a merit badge for SPECIFIC crimes.... you'd think there'd be just a "crime prevention" badge that would entail all crimes

The article says it's not a merit badge, just a patch, and it sounds like they have gotten one troop in California to agree to give it out to their scouts.

There is already a crime prevention patch AFAIK.

Ahh... you are correct! 6 to 21 does not restrict this to only "boy scouts" which are 13 or 14 - 18. This is venture and cubscouts as well, which are both not allowed to earn merit badges.

This is completely bogus. Anyone in scouting can make up their own patches and awards. Wow, what a big deal about nothing....

The Boy Scouts has always been very political above the local troop level. And the higher up you go, the deeper the bullsh|t gets.
It's still a great program - just find a good troop that doesn't give a damn what's going on at HQ (ie. most of them).
