Boys are being failed by our schools

A generation of boys is leaving school unable to cope in the modern world because lessons have become "feminised", according to a renowned academic.

They are falling behind in exams and the job market because teachers fail to nurture traditional male traits such as competitiveness and leadership.

Dr Tony Sewell said schools instead celebrate qualities more closely associated with girls such as methodical working and attentiveness in class.

He warned that boys are becoming disaffected and flunk exams and job interviews because their competitive instincts have been discouraged.

Some become so alienated they turn to gang violence to vent their frustrated masculine sides.

this sounds so retarded

I can see where they are coming from. Not to say that women cannot be leaders or be competitive, because they certainly can, its that men are by nature very competitive and want to be in charge.

There has been some interesting articles about the problem in the US with boys dropping out of school. Much of it, allegedly, had to do with resources being directed to encourage girls with the unfair assumption that boys will be fine. So after essentially ignoring boys for a generation, girls are excelling at school but surprise, surprise - boys aren't doing so well.

I see this is a British article, something similar was printed in the U.S. recently. Our entire educational system up to high school is in terrible shape, universities are still good for the most part, as well as other professional schools like medical and law. Hm lets see...universities, medical school, law school...gosh, all highly competitive, and succeeding. But for some reason some people think competition is bad for kids k-12.

We are witnessing the pussification of America. We celebrate mediocrity like it was some major accomplishment.

Schools like to celebrate qualities like doing what you're told and giving up your individuality to become a mindless, souless, conforming member of the american consumer society.
The education system is fvcked up.

Thank you.
History has also shown that a large percentage of the world's geniuses did poorly at school. Simply because you get much further in life focusing on things you're truly passionate about rather than being forced to do things you don't give a rats ass about.

I think he actually kicked ass at math, but just found it a waste of time to do the homework, so he ended up failing. Homework is a large percentage of your grade in gradeschool classes. People equate grades to mastery of skills, which is purely bogus. It maybe true in college, where grades are solely made up of test skills, but definitely not in grade school.

i thought he was bad at simple math, but excelled in the calculus and physics. stuff not taught at public schools at the time (and not today really either)

how can you be bad at simple math and excel in calculus and physics, which involve complex math?

Alot of this is just rhetoric, the pendulum will swing the other way soon enough and then back the other way. The problem is we are failing to realize the true core issue; what is it, I don't know; but we sure as heck aren't getting at it.

People say homework sucks, so we get rid of it, then kids still fail at the tests, so we get rid of that; but in the end you still have to deal with human nature.

My personal opinion is we grossly underestimate the influence of media upon young minds and vastly overestimate that schools and parents will effectively combat it; critical thinking skills are not being taught enough and early enough in education and at home.

Homework can me made optional like in college classes. Then you would only need to do the homework if it helps you. Then you don't have valedictorians that fails the exit exam because they got an A for effort.

You're right that critical thinking skills are not being taught enough. Society tend to condition kids to accept what they are told and listen to authority. Even from when you're a kid, you are taught about santa clause, how you won't get gifts if you're "naughty". Or God himself will send you to eternal suffering if you don't follow exactly what he says without question. School faculty tend to work on the same principle.

if you think school is bad, you should see what its like inside the jail. the only reason it works is because we are conditioned to listen to authority. i don't see any other way a jail would work. its just alot more extreme in there. yes you have your troublemakers but for the most part, the people in the jail are just doing their time till they get out

Einstein was a statistician. Nearly all of his great accomplishments, with the exception of the maths for theory of relativity (for which all the calculus had been done already by Laplace - the extension to physics was just Einstein being a genius, not being good at calculus) all of his great accomplishments were statistical. You call an Einstein-Bose Condensate an Einstein-Bose Condensate because Einstein's the one that developed the quantum statistical mechanics to describe the atomic state. The dude rocked ass at statistics, though... As far as I know on the Calculus front, he wasn't anything special.

You simply have to look at grades, test scores and the disparity between the boys and girls that attend college to see that school is failing boys. But, don't ask a feminist to explain that one.
