linksys makes crap. i have had the 4 port router for a month and EVER SINGLE WEEK it disconnects all computers and i have to reset the thing and manualy set the IP and the forwarding and crap like that. it happened TWICE today alone!
i run a game server and it was full BOTH times it crashed today. when your place keeps going down people tend to not come back, would Anandtech be popular if it was down all the time? probably not, same with game servers.

-ever week it disconnects and i have to manualy set it
-it cannot automatically detect the IP
-it's more expensive than any other router

POS!

Well, I've had my Linksys BEFSR41 router for well over a year and I've had zero problems with it. I'm running firmware 1.39 and it is rock solid; I haven't tried any newer versions.

running the befsr41 4 port router since when they first came out with it for my dsl connection.. moved and now using it for cable.. works great.

drumminboy: what installation wizard are you talking about? all i did was connect the cable to the WAN port, connect all my computers thru the LAN ports, goto 192.168.1.1 and set it all up.. no installation wizard needed.

the problem with mine is that it just disconnects whenever the hell it feels like it. here is how i installed it:
-plug the line from the modem into the WAN port
-plug computers into ports 4 and 3
-turn all the crap on
-set the IP manualy (because it doesn't work when you set it to manual, after registering the mac address that is)
-set the ports to forward

then i play with all my security on my game server.....then everything stops indicating a connection problem. i exit the game and go to the server and it says "
<client> timed out
<client> timed out
<client> timed out
<client> timed out
<client> timed out
"

well great, that happened 3 times today! i have to reset the IP, the gateway, the DNS and the forwarding 3 times in 1 day then there is a problem. i took the router off, put the hub back on and i haven't had a problem since. there is also less lag.

yes it does have the latest firmware. what do you mean by password set right? the only password is the one to change router settings which you don't even need to change, i changed mine alright but it craps out without me even trying to change anything.

I just meant that you should change your password. Changing other people's passwords for them isnt tough, but its mean and can do some of the things you mentioned :)

Do you have the newest firmware? Upgrading the firmware fixes a lot of problems (and so far hasn't caused any)...

I love my linksys router. Works like a charm...

I had the 4 port router and installation couldnt be simpler. All I did was plug it in and get new IP's via DHCP and it all worked. Installation time was less than 3 min.

For my wireless Linksys router, I installed software on the desktop machines and that took about 10 minutes total. They Linksys wireless products also work a lot further than advertised

So I have worked with my Linksys routers for 13 minutes total and they have been working strong for a year.... I like Linksys products :D

You might have gotten a lemon, have you tried getting an RMA, or maybe returning it when it was closer to being new?

Chooco, This link is just for you.

Why the hell would I boycott linksys just because you have problems? I have been using their NICs, hubs, and routers since back in 98. I have never had a problem.

I've had my BEFSR41 router since the day they came out and have not had a probelm with it. I've also used their NIC cards and except for the last two i got (can't get them to work with W2K) everything has worked fine.

You probably have got a bad router and need to return it.

Future Shop says they won't take it back becuase it's already been 30 days, Linksys says they won't exchange it without getting $20 shipping and handling, screw that. i'll just get a D-Link, D-Link stuff have never given me a problem, my hub and ethernet in both computers are D-Link.

DrumminBoy there is no installiation for the router. That's just guide to help you set it up.
The reason you get that message "no network" is be cause you must go into the router , click advanced, and click Mac Clone.
type the mac address of your nic in.
also make sure your router is setup as a dhcp server for the lan side
and a obtains an ip from the wan side.

that is how mine was set, it has the mac address of my Athlon's nic card after registering the mac of the router didn't work. DHCP is the default setting, when set on automatic it thought my ip started with 10 but in reality my ip starts with 66

I just skipped the wizard thing and plugged my cables in, worked immediately. Now i just need to figure out file sharing between these things (the home network wizard in XP says i cant network XP and 2k machines...

) I'm retracting my boycott against linksys, my nic is working fine and the router set itself up w/o having to configure anything...sounds pretty good to me.

here is some flame for you.

just because you can't set up your network correctly doesn't make linksys crap. On that encouraging others to boycott a company because of your ignorace is irresponsible and idiotic. why don't you ask a quality question that may solve your problem before comming out and cramming your "crap" down onto this forum.

upgrade your firmware, make sure remote administration is turned off, and for god sakes change your default password. If you can't figure out how to do this feel free to ask. Yes with newer firmware (earlier releases) I ran into the same problem. upgrading the firmware and making sure that you have enough ventilation around your router makes this go away. (yes your router needs air too.)
