Boy killed by exploding office chair

A young Chinese boy has died after an office chair he was sitting on exploded, according to reports.

The 14-year-old suffered massive blood loss after the chair's gas cylinder burst, sending parts of the metal chair into his rectum.

A gas cylinder containing compressed air is a regular feature of adjustable office chairs, with an air valve generally operated by a handle on the side of the chair used to raise or lower the seat.

The incident is the second recorded case of a Chinese person being injured by an exploding chair, with the first incident occurring back in 2007.

Newspaper reports claimed a 68-year-old man escaped with only minor injuries after a 20cm piece of the chair pierced his buttocks.

Pictures of the exploded chair's remains have swept the internet, but the identity of the victim has not been revealed, nor has the area of China in which the incident allegedly happened.

That reminds me of an incident at work - one of the managers (a very big girl) threw herself down into the office chair and it imploded under her weight. She went down, and parts of the chair went 4 other directions.

How does one inject air into the gas cylinder if one wants to raise the seat (assuming releasing the air would lower the seat)?
