The sound.....

Fifth Gear review
Engine sound (idle/rev)
Background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superformance

Most kit cars we come across are near faithful representations of their muse. Unfortunately, there's always something a little off about the design that doesn't quite match up with the way we remember the original, and nearly always they're only skin deep, offering up merely the appearance of authenticity with the substance of something much lesser. Superformance, the producers of the best Cobra and Cobra Daytona Coupes replicas in the business, builds something a little more than a "kit car". All of its products are complete factory manufactured rollers minus an engine and transmission. This allows the company to bust a fat right around complex emissions and safety regulations by classifying their products as kit cars, though obviously they're so much more.

I'm a much bigger fan of their Daytona.

All of their cars are spectacular. I appreciate the old designs much more than the extoic look of todays cars.

Yeah I like the Daytona as well, but I can't seem to find any price range on that online? (Not that it matters, just out of curiosity)

Those are nice, but I've always liked Factory Five's offerings a whole lot better. Their GTM supercar is incredible and cheap to build, and their Cobra replica is just the best Cobra replica out there, IMO.

Yeah, but Superformance can officially call it a Shelby.

But I just looked at Factory Five, and they look nice too. Seem to be a good bit cheaper as well (price wise). It looks like $20K for base and then you have to get motor, transmission and tires, which I'm guessing would be another $20K? So $40K for that car isn't bad at all.

I agree with DougK. I looked at Shelby Cobra replicas and I like the Factory Five kits better. The shape Superperformance kit cars didn't look quite right to me when I was looking at the kits. The Factory Five looked like a more faithful re-creation of the lines on the Cobra. They may have updated that since then.
Also I'm pretty sure the Factory Five kits were a lot cheaper than a Superperformance kit since the FFR kits let you optionally make use of a Mustang 5.0 for a donor. It won't be a true Cobra replica though since they ran 289's and 427's and you're also reusing most of the suspension, steering gear and drive train from the donor car. As far as building a replica that looks like a Cobra and performs like one for the lowest amount I think the FFR kit is the winner.
I'm not sure what the Superperformance kit involves, but from the sound of it you get everything you need to make a rolling Cobra replica(minus the wheels of course) and then you just buy a crate motor and transmission. So in terms of completeness the Superperformance kit would be the winner and you won't have to deal with refurbishing parts from a donor car.
I read a really good build blog on one of the FFR kit cars a fellow built. He really did a nice job on it too. He pulled the independent rear suspension of a Thunderbird SC coupe for his rear end along with the hubs and hardware and refurbished it all and bolted it into his Cobra. For a motor he had a 347 crate motor that he built up.
It's a really great build log with lots of pictures and details. Gives you a good idea of what's involved in building one of these kit cars. Lots of work, but so rewarding when you take the car for it's first go kart run around the block! From what I hear these things are just insanely fast since they're so light with such a big motor in them.

Link to the build log if you're up for a good read

Someday I'd like to build one. Maybe when I hit my mid life crisis if the financial situation allows for it.
