SHEBOYGAN, Wis. Jan. 5 â?? A 7-year-old boy had to be rescued with the help of a locksmith Saturday after crawling into a supermarket's stuffed animal game machine while his father talked on the telephone.

"He was sitting right in there with the stuffed animals," said Shift Commander Mark Zittel of the Sheboygan Fire Department.

He said the boy, whose name was not released because he is a minor, crawled through about an 8-inch-by-10-inch opening to get into the glass enclosure via a chute where the toys come out, but when he tried to get back out his way was blocked.

The stuffed animals are prizes that can be hooked by players with a crane-like device.

"His dad was three feet away at a pay phone," Zittel said. "He was talking on the phone and he said the next thing he turned around and the kid was in the thing."

He said the boy stayed calm and didn't panic as firefighters responded to the Piggly Wiggly store and then moved the game machine to the back of the store and got a locksmith to open the main loading door. The process took about an hour.

"There was no panic," Zittel said. "We could have broke the glass if there was an emergency."

The boy was not injured or traumatized but desperately had to go to the bathroom, he said.

But rescuers hadn't figured out how the boy was able to crawl into the game, or why no one in the store's busy lobby spotted him and stopped him before he got inside.

The question is:

1. How many stuffed animals was he able to grab?
2. How much will they sell for on eGay?

I've read about this happening before. Weird. Does anybody actually get anything outta those games, even if you get the animals right the claw doesn't close tight so it just slips off. I believe they are programmed that way, such that maybe every $10-20 worth of plays someone might win.

then again, I saw a machine at a walmart that is almost always empty, so it might be some work different than others.

lol I can imagine the WTF look his father must have had. Personally I'd have stabbed at him a few times with the crane before getting him out, damn stupid kids.

I've won something out of one of those. It has to be on the top, and you have to grab them by the head. If I was the father I would've put some quarters in and tried to get the kid out that way :D

mmmm, remote control Homer Simpson....

Yep, they're all over around here. My dad sent me that article yesterday afternoon - how embarassing! I wish we could have gotten pics though.

We use to have one at the pizza place I worked at.
I don't know how, but my manager got good enough at it that he could get an animal about 1 out of every 3 tries.

I think the two go hand in hand ;). When you were 7, did you have the urge to climb inside a fvcking vending machine?!

this is weird because if i recall correctly those machines have a mechanism to block anything coming up the chute where the stuffed animals are dropped so that people cant get their hand and arm up the chute and grab a prize, the same mechanism will allow a the stuffed animal to drop through...so how was the kids way blocked?

I had the joy of responding to a call where a jackass, klepto soldier tried to steal a soda from a vending machine by sticking his arm up inside of it. The drum mechanism that drops the pop into the tray sensed motion and rolled over on his thumb, trapping him shoulder deep into the machine. The Fire Dept. showed up and decided to open the machine with the jaws of life if for no other reason than to charge the jackass for the damage to the vending machine too. All in all, he paid over $2000.00 in damages for his stupidity. We even charged him for the beverages damaged opening the machine up.
