That's pretty sad that a cop wouldn't have better sense than to lock up a gun while he was babysitting.

Thats sad, but no one is perfect. The cop obviously forgot about his gun.
It's something he is going to have to live with for the rest of his life. His mistake caused the death of a 4 year old child.

Safety is one of the most stressed issues for a cop. This was a huge fvck-up.

To quote Glock's website...

"The safe handling of firearms, like morality, can not be legislated into existence. Only firearms users can make the safe use and storage of firearms a reality. Please make certain that you do your part."

This trained officer didn't do his part.

True.... but when I read the title of the thread, my first reaction was "bet it was a Glock"

Mine do.

I saw a thing. This cop had taught his 6 year old everything. When questioned about what to do if he were to find a gun he answered " Tell an adult" and all the right responses.

They hid a camera and planted a gun and as soon as he found it the first thing he did was point it at his friend and start pulling the trigger.

yes a very sad mistake. While i really do not think the officer should be charged. i do think he should lose his job and never be a PO again.
This mistake (wich he is trained to avoid) cost a 4 yr olds life.

What a total idiot. He really should be liable for this one. It was 100% preventable. That child is dead because the cop was an utter moron.

Yup, but you've got to love Glock's politics...not trying to invent bigger idiots :)

Grew up with guns in my house, my dad grew up with guns in his dad's house, etc. None of us have ever misused firearms, even at a young age.

And why would should a kill "tell an adult" if they find a gun?

"Dad, I found a gun under your bed."

"Yeah, that's where I keep it.........?"

Anti-gunners will blame the gun itself for the shooting and fight to ban them.

The reality of course that a gun is a tool. So is a chainsaw. A lot of kids kill or cripple themselves with those.

My dad was a cop for 33 years and us kids grew up in the house with a few unlocked guns, in addition to all the hunting guns in 2 locked gun cabinets. But we knew where the keys were.

We simply knew what a gun was and often went shooting them with my dad either at a range or out hunting. My dad also was a member of a skeet club and we watched him shoot there regularly.

Even young kids age 4 can understand to keep away from a gun. With proper introduction to what a gun is and what shooting them does to a target.

This kid in the article who shot himself follows the same exact pattern of most other kid-gun accidents. They are curious and make dumb mistakes.

Watching violent television as a kid also desensitizes them to what a gun can do.

A glock is a dangerous pistol for a novice because of the safety inside the trigger. A young kid won't know how to operate that. A revolver is much more understandable.
