Bowling strats

Gone twice in the past 3 weeks, and I'm starting to be a bowling whore again.....

I usually just throw the ball straight using a 12 or 13 lb ball..

137 and 128 my first 2 games 3 weeks ago.

103 and 119 on Monday, but I was experimenting with a curve. I did some thumbless bowling too to see how it would work.

I'm gonna go Thursday again, but I would like some advice. I know that pro bowlers use their thumb, but many intermediate bowlers use thumbless bowling (palm bowling) and curve their balls for a decent score..

Any tips/strats for you guys?

Check this out. 😛

I'd give you some tips, but I'm lefty, and according to bowling aficionados, I'm just "lucky".

Anyway, are you lefty or righty? Do you own your own ball? Bowling is probably the easiest looking 'sport', but in reality there is a LOT to it. I've been bowling for over 10 years now and I learn something everytime I bowl.

If you're just beginning, work on balance, tempo and follow-through. There's more to it, but that'll get you going.

Right handed.. not my own ball. I'm going to get shoes soon because I know I'm getting ripped off on rentals. Once I settle down on a good ball weight I could try to go get my own ball..

If you're a guy, I wouldn't use a ball under 15 pounds. 16 would be best if you have the wrist strength. (your wrist strength will build up quickly)

Just a warning though, bowling can be every bit as addicting as CRACK (EQ, WoW), or any hobby for that matter if you've got any obsessive personality traits. If you're serious about bowling, get some nice Linds shoes, they're expensive up front, but they'll last you forever.

My arm can hold a 14 or 16 fine, but my thumb gets fatigued? I don't k now. I'm looking at my thumb and there was like a blister on it from tuesday. There's like blood underneath the skin... My thumb was hurting my second game last time and I couldn't really bowl too well c uz of it....

But yea, I hope my wrist strength will build...

You WILL get callouses and blisters if you become serious with bowling, that is unavoidable. In fact, your bowling thumb will be significantly fatter than your other thumb. 😛

Anyway, you can minimize the callouses and blistering by getting your own ball. It's drilled to fit your hand exactly, so there is far less abrasion compared to the generic fit house balls.

Find the lightest ball with the biggest finger holes. With a fair amount of muscle, you can hurl that thing and do way more damage than lugging a heavier ball. I practically overhand pitch the 15's if I can find a ball that doesn't have children's finger holes.

It is difficult to get a strike using a 6-8 pound ball, regardless of velocity. 😛 Pins weigh 4.5 pounds each. Although it is fun to goof around with 6-8 pounders to let off some steam. 🙂

I have never seen a 6-8 bowling ball :Q

I didn't mean go preschool, I mean go junior high

Crap, and I just started breaking 600. My only claim to fame is going into a 5 gamer with a 156 average and bowling 1025 scratch. With my handicap those guys wanted to kill me.

Yeah it's crazy addictive. I must've bought at least 5 balls within the last year.

Oh, and as far as weight goes, grab a ball, let it dangle, and then flex and keep your wrist straight. If you can hold it for 10 sec or so then your wrist is strong enough for that weight. A heavier ball won't deflect as much when it hits the pins. You want your ball to drive through consistently.

In order to curve the ball using your thumb you HAVE to have your own ball. Custom balls have holes drilled specifically for you in a way that when you release the ball correctly it naturalyl puts a spin. Plus they have uneven weight distribution to help with spin and have a special coating surface that heats up as the ball goes down the lane changing its path. Your own ball will hugely improve your game. Houseballs are simply designed to be thrown straight. You can always use the thumbless approach to spin it with your wrist. But you won't be able to use anything over 13 or so pounds without hurting yourself and you won't ever be accurate enough to average 170 but it's still alot of fun.

I haven't bowled in years, but when I did I had an average of about 168 or so, and had one hell of a massive hook. Once you're able to control it, you can get a lot of power out of it 🙂
