anyone know what kinda average score you should bowl to join a league and not annoy everyone? I've been bowling between a 150-170, which isn't great, but much improved for me. Is this way too low to even think about starting?

Every bowling league I have ever participated in handicapped the scores up to 200.
So if you average was 160 you would get 40 pins every game. That way bowlers of all
skill levels can compete together, and real good bowlers aren't effected. Because they probably
bowl over 200 anyway, so when they bowl their 210 its going to be better than your 160 + 40.

Bowling on a league is a lot of fun. Bowling against someone better than you helps your game because it makes you concentrate on your game to throw a good shot. Some leagues are more serious than others. Just relax and have fun. :)

Sounds similar to our golf league. Everyone has a shot at the big money, even the 30 handicappers.

There are handicap leagues, as mentioned above, but then you have some really good bowlers who 'sandbag'. Basically they'll figure out what is needed to win the games (start out strong, and see that they are beating the other teams) and then start throwing crap so that their average doesn't go up (and therefor the handicap goes down)

As the season progresses, they'll have built an artificially low average, so if they are playing one of the other tough teams they will really bowl (like they can) and then the handicap they've accumulated up to then gives them the edge. You would think people wouldn't really do that, but, you'd be wrong. Of course, not everyone does this, but moreso when there are money prizes to give out.

Been a long time since I've been on a league, but, I assume it hasn't changed in the leagues that have handicaps.
