Just to start.... I am Pro-Gun.

I watched this movie last night and it is quite strange. (The facts, not the movie)

Here is a little Gun Deaths per 100,000 people statistic from another source:

Here are gun-related deaths per 100,000 people in the world's 36 richest countries in 1994:
United States 14.24; Brazil 12.95; Mexico 12.69; Estonia 12.26; Argentina 8.93; Northern Ireland 6.63; Finland 6.46; Switzerland 5.31; France 5.15; Canada 4.31; Norway 3.82; Austria 3.70; Portugal 3.20; Israel 2.91; Belgium 2.90; Australia 2.65; Slovenia 2.60; Italy 2.44; New Zealand 2.38; Denmark 2.09; Sweden 1.92; Kuwait 1.84; Greece 1.29; Germany 1.24; Hungary 1.11; Republic of Ireland 0.97; Spain 0.78; Netherlands 0.70; Scotland 0.54; England and Wales 0.41; Taiwan 0.37; Singapore 0.21; Mauritius 0.19; Hong Kong 0.14; South Korea 0.12; Japan 0.05.

Isn't that amazing?

Why do we have such a high death rate with guns? Do other countries use other weapons? Are other countries less violent? What's the deal?

Also, I highly disagree that it is a problem with the guns..... I think it has to do with the way Americans THINK about guns.

The whole point of Bowling for Columbine was to show that the media was to blame..... I agree partly.

What do you think?

My guess is that because our population is so much larger than those other countries. More people = more chances for someone to get shot. Just a guess.

It's deaths per 100,000 - so I don't think total population matters too much.

Japan has 126 million people, roughly 1/2 of ours, but their gun death rate is about 1/285 of ours. Mind you this is in a country the size of California, but with 1/5 habitable of the land (or something like that). So I'm thinking total population isn't a factor here, especially since it's "per 100,000 people" anyway. I'm betting guns are that much easier to acquire in this country.

Being a gun toting Albertan myself, that is the first time I've ever heard that claim and I really doubt it.

Yeh it doesn't sound too plausible what with all the 38 specials in the States
..maybe what I saw was something to do with just rifle ownership
in fact it might have even been in that movie

?? Left wingers want gun control.... the movie doesn't blame it on gun control or violence in games/movies. Considering Michael Moore stated that other countries such as Canada allow you to get firearms just as easily. To me I think it does have to do with how news media portrays the country we live in. Darkie is always killing, raping, or robbing whitie, etc. etc. African bees are gonna take over our country. The year 2000 will bring havok. BLAH BLAH BLAH..... We as a people rely too much on television. People believe everything that they are spoodfed and too few people stop to think for themselves.

We're pretty much fed that we should all be afraid of everything be it guns or killer bees. So before you go "liberal" bashing watch the movie, and if you've already seen it, watch it again, because you probably didn't get the damn point because you're too busy pointing fingers at the screen and crying LIBERAL BULLSH!T..... Being a moderate myself I'd rather shy away from the name-calling that conservatives seem to be so proud of. Liberals are mostly too chicken to come up with a good name for conservatives, but conservatives just love grouping anyone who doesn't agree with their narrow-minded ideas HIPPIES or LIBERALS (as though the term liberal itself is somehow derogatory).

I support the First Admendment which I interpret to allow private gun ownership. But I think that there would be fewer deaths by guns if there fewer guns available.

I also think there would be fewer violent deaths if the US changed its drug laws by taking the profit out of selling drugs. This happened when the US overturned Prohibition.

Um did I ever say conservatives are stupid? Anyone who thinks that the media is wholly liberal isn't seeing the bigger picture. If you look at all the people that own these stations you'd realize they're all corporate fat cats. You think Rupert Murdoch is a liberal? HAHA!

Start reading up on it

"I admit it -- the liberal media were never that powerful, and the whole thing was often used as an excuse by conservatives for conservative failures."
William Kristol, as reported by the New Yorker, 5/22/95

I don't like leftists or rightists.... I hate them both equally. To categorize yourself as either one is to close your mind from the possibilty that you are wrong.
