Bouncing emails - Bad thing to do?

I read somewhere that when you bounce emails from spammers, it really isn't effective. They have ways of knowing that it's a fake bounce (I use mailwasher) and it just adds you to more lists.
Is there any truth behind this?

It might be bad, but it's worked for me, sometimes slowly, but quite consistantly.

By bounce do you mean that you return the message saying that the e-mail address is no longer valid?
