Bounce Flash

Last week, during a discussion, it was mentioned that the high ceiling prevented a bounce flash. Here is a technique that you can try. This shows the Canon 580EX II flash mounted on the EOS 5d camera. The flash is angled up, and a white card (built in to the flash) has been extended. This allows a bounce effect regard less of a ceiling or no ceiling.

The light will not be as strong, but it will be softer for head shots, etc. Experiment for the right exposure.

Bounce cards are a lot more versatile than people give them credit for. In a pinch, I've used my Costco card and driver's license to bounce with.

I strongly recommend moving the flash off-camera though.

Good points. The use of a credit card is good or a 3x5 note card if you don't have a built in card.

As for detaching the flash - that is not always preactical when you are moving around shooting people at a function. That would have to be set up and posed, or you have an assistant who can hold it for you.

The extending bounce card is usually used to provide the "glint" in subject's eyes when using bounce flash.
In a pinch, tape a 3x5 note card onto the back and bend it over the flash. Thinking about it now, I should put that kit in my bag...
