Bought Xbox1, came in shoddy packaging, what should I do?

So, I bought an Xbox1 from somebody from another forum. The seller had good ratings, so I thought, go for it.

I want to use as a media center in the living room. In order to use it as a media center, I have to mod it (I plan on softmodding), and I was prepared to do that. However, the modding is what makes this situation complicated.

I just received the xbox today and the packaging was horrible. The unit was shipped in the original xbox box without any extra padding or peanuts or anything. There was no styrofoam whatsoever. Just the xbox, the controllers, and the (wrong) cables. The actual console seems solidly built and not fragile. Cosmetically it's in good shape. I tested it out and it worked fine (all the controllers also seem to work fine). However, I'm concerned about its longterm functionality. If it works fine now, do you think it can break sometime down the road?

Seems like the HDD is the biggest potential problem. I was probably going to replace the HD at some point. But I don't want to now. I suppose I can replace it sooner rather than later, though, if it comes to that.

I'm hesitant to mod it now because if something goes wrong, I won't be sure if it were my fault or the fault of the seller.

Also, he shipped me the wrong power cable. I had to borrow a cable from a friend to test it out. I'll get him to ship out the right one, but I'm not sure what to do about the other stuff.

Should I just return the xbox and demand a full refund? Should I mod the xbox right away? Should I wait awhile to make sure it keeps working? Should I demand anything from him now? I'm fairly certain the seller was just careless and not trying to fleece me or anything. But I don't know how to proceed. Should I try to get him to agree to refund me some of the money if something goes wrong later? Even if I mod the xbox myself?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Edit update:
I sent him the PM about my concerns, but he was more concerned about the wrong cable (and he was quite concerned). He didn't mention the packaging. He did promise to get the cable mis-hap fixed. In my original message to him, I didn't mention that I tested it out (with another cable) so that to him, I don't know if it works yet or not. I figure that it buys me a week in case something does in fact go wrong.

Is the seller from here or another site fanerman91?

I'd leave negative heat (assuming you went through the boards and the heatware system). Improper packaging is awful. You ALWAYS have to have a second outside box with a layer of peanuts or bubble wrap in between the outer box and the product. But, if it works now and nothing rattles inside of it, I'd just mod it. Those things are pretty durable.

i think that you should leave neutral, but keep it and mod it. the only part of it that would pose a potential problem long term i think would be the hard drive, and if you got it cheap enough, then shipping it back and buying another one would just be a waste.

you're going to want a nice meaty hard drive anyways if you want to have a nice media center

I think the biggest question is, aside from the hard drive (which I suppose I can replace sooner rather than later), if everything else is working now, is it possible it can stop working later due to potential shock and abuse from shipping? The unit does look pretty solid. And I'd rather not go through the hassle of shipping it back and looking for another xbox and all that crap.

BTW, how can I check to see if the hard drive is working?

I doubt anything will happen to it later if it works now. The hard drive is working if the Xbox boots.

Edit: Boots as in gets to the menu/loads a disk. Powering on doesn't count. The light should flash if the HD isn't working.

play with it...till u get ur mod parts in...or at least 3-4 days if not a week. If nothing happens, i doubt anything will later.
If you got the cheapest deal you could, i would keep it, especially since you are modding it and removing the HD later anyways. if you paid a normal amount that you could anywhere (ebay) or here...then ask for a return at your discretion (as in, you'r the best judge of what it looks like and how it works, etc)

hard drives when shut down can take quite a bit of shock, like the newer ones especially have head locks or something like that. If it works fine, odds are it will be fine and won't die any sooner. I'd keep it, leave a neutral stating exactly why, xbox works fine but packaging shoddy, etc etc....

The X-Box is probably fine, but I would definitely leave appropriate heat (whatever that is, is your choice).

added greenman100 to do not trade list....

I wouldn't be concerned about longevity.. the HD should be replaced anyway. I would bring my issues up w/ the trader and see what his response is. Depending on his response, i'd leave a neutral or negative. definitely mention how it was packaged.

stop being a crybaby, you got what you paid for, a working xbox

wtf?
The packaging was grade F!
F as in failure...
You don't ship sensitive electronics in it's original non padded box.
Stop being an ass.

If it works now it will work fine. Even if it dies in a weeks time you can't be sure it was the packaging (or lack-there-of) that caused it. If you got it and it was DOA or it was cracked and such then you have a gripe. But it works now, is not damaged so you got what you paid for.

Leave neutral feedback... but a refund? Common....

I personally would have put it in another box, but if the original packaging is good enough for Microsoft to ship it in, why can't someone else do the same thing? If the xbox works now I wouldn't worry about it at all.

instead HD(high definition)

yes because its confusing otherwise 😕
while HDD is the proper way to do it, 99% of the general population doesn't undertand.

The packaging was shoddy? Who gives a fvck? If it works and it looks fine cosmetically I don't see what you're concerned with.

If I sold it to you and you contacted me to complain about the packaging I'd tell you to sit on it and twirl.

I nominate this post for dumbest post of the day.
