Bought something online in Europe. Paid with my Visa.

Its a reputable company in that at least the orders come (talked to others who have used them). However, I'm not sure if they also scam info at the same time perhaps?

They claim my card company has asked for further security info to clear the payment and want my DOB.

I'm wary but at the same time I know tons of others who've used them no problem.

Has anyone else ever had a similar experience where they genuinely need your DOB to verify with the CC company? When my father bought a $6000 Apple they put a stop on the order and he had to call up Apple a week later to find out why it wasn't processed--the Visa/bank said it wasn't "like" him or his past purchase pattern etc.

So far they have my name, address and CC info. I doubt I'll give them the DOB unless this can be considered "normal".

Doesn't sound right. Shouldn't really need to. What do they need that for anyway? If you are getting it shipped to the same address as your billing address on your card then there shouldn't be a question IMO.

Thats the thing. I'm having it shipped to another address by speical request (CC still goes to my parents, I'm away at school where my address varies).

3 way call with Credit card company and the company you ordered from. That will take care of it.

I would call the cc company and confirm your address with them and then tell the place where you bought something to check with the cc company instead. No reason to give them info that is only needed to verify your credit card which should be taken care of by the cc company. That way there is only one place to go when there is a problem.

Eh I'm not sure (don't think so). Safest bet is probably to cancel the order and just tell them I'll send a cheque or MO.

Even if the CC company did request my DOB from them and it is legitimate--I'd rather not have someone (legit or not) with all this info about me (name, address, DOB, CC details). Its probably not good for anyone to have all that info about you heh.

I'll call up Visa and see if they can tell me any more about it ;)

DON'T send a check or MO. There is no guarantee you would ever get your product. At least a Credit Card company will fight fraud for you.

The place does and has delivered in the past for others I've talked to.

About to call Visa--I'll just add this address to the card and it will make it simple. At least I can charge back (my card has some fraud coverage I pay a fee for).

thanks for the tips guys

i used to work for an online retailer that would submit orders for further review if there was something that seemed fishy. you shipping it to your school address doesn't sound like a big deal, but it is a big deal with credit card companies because of possible fraud. someone could have your card number and billing address and charge a bunch of money to your card. so in order to protect you from that, they have review processes and extra steps to make sure it is actually you making the purchase.

my advice is to contact your CC company and let them know that it is a valid purchase and have them contact the retailer to tell them that it's ok. i wouldn't give out any information to the retailer if you have suspicions.
