I wanted to get him a Pickup Truck, but the prices are way too high. The reason I wanted the full size truck was for safety concerns. He's turning 16 on December 26th. I wanted to surprise him with the vehicle. He didn't seem too enthused about the pickup idea, and I doubt this 'boat' will be much better. If you were 16, would you be embarrassed to own it?

We did see a slick 1990 Infinity Q45 for $9,000.00, but that price is way out of line and God knows what repairs would cost for it anyway. This Mercury fits the bill for safety and should be cheap to keep. Gotta stash it somewhere till Christmas and find a nice big ribbon to put on it...

Hey, you're getting him a car, lucky kid. I should take a pick of my future 84 volvo with 200k miles, you'll see what a great parent you are then ;)

I'd be embarassed but I'm a car freak and that's pretty much the only reason why... I need to have my sport compact ...

other than the fact i am a car nut and am specific on what i like, i wouldn't mind having the car.. but only gets me from a to b... that's not what I look for in my cars..

Well, a car is car and it's his first, but he will be kind of disapointed to be driving a car like a Marqius. Marquis has a bit of an old person tag with it. It really depends. Since it is his first car, he might not mind. My first car was gonna be my mom's Toyota Avalon and I would not of really minded it, but she bought me a Mitsubishi Eclipse for my first car. I loved it, but it's gone now. I am now driving my mom's Avalon and I have to say that going from an Eclipse to an Avalon was embaressing at first, but I got used to it because it was either drive a car to school or wake up an hour earlier to take the bus.

Hey, beats my first car.

A 1960 Corvair I paid $50 for.

Wish I still had it though (at least the motor, I'd put it in my VDud)

Looks like a nice car. I had the privilege of driving an '84 Colt but I felt lucky that I even had a car and didn't have to ride the bus :p Hopefully he'll look at it that way too.

Ornery It will help if you quit calling it a 'boat.';)

Besides, go drive it for a day and you'll be surprised about how it behaves. It has a ride at highway speeds that euro/nippo cars can only lust after!

Everything about that car is rock solid! How is the radio? That is at least as important as anything else...

speaking as someone "in the age range" of your son.... he might be a tad bit disapointed at first, but then he'll realize.... hmmmm... i have my own car.... hmmm... that back seat is alot bigger than any sports car back seat.... hmmm... how handy.... jk :)
I'm sure he'll be happy just to have a car, and there are alot worse cars you could have gotten him.

If he has a g/f like I do, she will be happy. When my g/f heard that my current car was an Avalon, she jumped for joy because she realized that I will not be tempted to speed in such a "boring" car. Little does she know that a car with a 200HP engine can really haul ass, but I just keep that part to my self;)

Oh eakers, I'm so sorry to hear about having to drive the mini van! :( My wife is making noise about buying one for herself and I almost vomit every time I think about it!

I had to buy my own first car in 1973, a 1966 Belair 4dr, for $250.00. I swore my kids would do the same. Well, 28 years later, I've changed my mind. Hell, his friends are driving new SUVs and Camrys! That Avalon sounds pretty damn nice, Gibson.

Just got off the phone with my wife. Even she is a little concerned about 'giving' him the car for a Christmas/Birthday present. She said it won't be in his name anyway. Bah! The only other vehicles we have for him to drive are a rusty old '77 Town car and an '88 E-150 Conversion van. Talk about embarrassing!

I know I may be slightly prejudiced, but he's the best kid in the world. Very mature, unselfish and NEVER gets into trouble. I'm certain he'll let us borrow it once in a while ;)

Oh, the Avalon is nice. I really could not careless now, though. I have more things to worry about like college.

i would be happy to get a car for a christmas present. my parents said they would pay for half of a car up to 4k total for my birthday. I still didn't have a car when christmas came around, I was pissed. I finally got a good deal on my dad's cowoker's truck. I have since sold that and bought a nissan maxima, a much nicer car.

he should be happy with that, even though this domestic is not as reliable as you think...

Tominator is on to something key about the sound system. At the very least, spring for another ~$100 for a CD player.

If your son is heavy into MP3's, though, then you know what to do! :)

With tunes on tap, the bloat-o-boat will be magically transformed into a concert hall on wheels!!

Hah what a boat! If I got that car I'd be embarassed but after awhile I guess it wouldn't matter. But then again I may be picky and the reason why I don't have the car STILL (PISSES ME OFF!). Naw lately I don't give a damn what car I get but even then I never get one so... It is safe though. Hah 17mpg city... who's paying for gas? :)

If he does gag he's got a serious problem, my first car (yes, from my parents) was a 1983 Toyota Tercel with 218K miles on it. Worth $300 if it had a full tank of gas.

I was pulled over doing 75-80 in it though.

:D

This car moves out pretty well with the fuel injected V8. The nice thing is, the guy I bought it from is VERY conservative and it was his wife's car. He purchased it new and serviced it regularly. I think when I test drove it was the first time anybody really accelerated hard in it. His eyes were bugging out a bit :D

We'll see about getting an CD/MP3 player and remote start added at some point. Gotta see what else needs tweaking first...

lucky kid :), I never had a car when i was 16, didn't learn how to drive till 19 . I'm 21 and I still have no car :D. but yeah he'd probably be embarassed by it at first. if I became a parent, I probably wouldn't trust a 16 year old behind the wheel
