i have a blackberry curve and i like it a lot so im going from what i am used to.

1. no vibrate before ring on the G1. my daughters togo phone fricken has that feature and so does every phone out there but the G1. WTF

2. it seems like they took the features that people would use everyday and buried them deep in the OS. Like voice mail for instance. what a pain so she downloaded the app that manages messages which simplified it significantly.

3. also its not very intuitive on how to change settings. you have to sit and tinker with it for a long time before you figure it out. like changing the ring tone to different messages. on my BB its a snap on the G1 its several different trees you have to drill into.

4. also i have yet to figure out how to take songs on the data card and assign them as a ring tone.

5. no basic instruction book. like on how to do the things listed above, ive had to google the damn question.

for ringtones, go into the music player, drill down to the song
press and hold on the screen for the song you want, a menu pops up , play, add to playlist , use as ringtone, delete
pick use as ringtone

These are two things about Blackberries that I don't like. A lot of phones don't have vibrate then ring - I hate vibrate that ring, and I really hate phones that don't have the option to just vibrate + ring. Its also very annoying that you have to manually change notification/vibrate/ring settings for each thing individually on the blackberry.

What do you mean its not intuitive how you change settings? You press menu, and then settings?

1.) I don't use this feature on my blackberry so that's not a big deal.

2.) Sounds annoying. Every phone I've ever used has hotkeyed voicemail to #1 button. So to get your voicemail you hold down '1'. Does the G1 not do this?

3.) The blackberry was a giant PITA to change tones for incoming messages. When I moved from windows mobile to BB I had to google to find out how to do it. It's only a snap after you know how to do it so it doesn't seem any different than other smartphones.

4.) This might be a folder issue. IIRC if you put song track on the blackberries into the MUSIC folder they won't show up as ringtones. If you put them in RINGTONES they'll show up. The music player can browse any folder though, so if you kept everything in RINGTONES you could still play it through the music player. Maybe the G1 has something similar.

5.) That's pretty dumb. Quite a few of my Q's are solved via the instructions.

I think Tmobile Sidekick cell phone does have that feature but I never bother to try it because I am hearing impaired anyway

i love that feature, i have it setup to behave different for different alerts. i know when my curve is in my holdster exactly what is incoming. very useful to tell the difference between a text from my wife or a emergency page/email from work.

Maybe I'm not getting what Deeko is saying properly, but blackberries can change profiles from 'normal' to 'vibrate', 'silent', 'loud', etc... and that affects the entire phone. Once you have a profile selected you can go in and edit each individual notification if you want like you were saying. But by default if you want to turn on vibrate for the whole phone it takes a mere 2 clicks. Also on the BB Pearl there's a shortcut key: hold the # key and the phone turns to vibrate. Hold # again and it turns back to 'normal'.

Again, these features might be there guys. You just have to know how to use them.

Yes, but on the BB you have to manually change each individual setting when you're setting up the profile. Is it nice to have the OPTION to change each thing? Yes - but what would be ideal would be to have a global setting within the profile. Lets say I don't want it to vibrate twice for notifications - I want it to vibrate once. On the BB, you have to change all of them individually.

1. I think the first "ring" is just a vibrate. I usually feel the phone before I hear it but maybe you just have to be fast or take it out before you can hear it.

Anyhow, just make a ringtone with a few seconds of silence at the start if there isn't a way to set that anywhere in settings.

2. ? voice mail is just dial 1, or I think it's easy to find in the call log thing too. I get a voicemail notification and just press it to dial voice mail.

3. Maybe a couple things are hard to find I dunno... there are apps to make quick shortcuts to anything you can imagine though.

4. Easiest is maybe the Ringdroid app I've used, or google for the folder structure to put it in. I think I saw other ideas in this thread too.

5. Good thing googling on the phone is a button press away hehe

The phone was made like this so the user can install the apps they want to utilize the phone.

you should learn a bit more before bashing / whining about something.

My phone does everything you bitch about it not doing....
