Always wanted a mac to play with but they've always been too expensive. Finally found one I could afford. ;) The plan is to put in a spare IDE hard drive and cd-burner as well as some old sdram and install OS X. Hopefully it'll all be compatible.

Believe the G3 fits the OS X requirements (although, it is the minimum supported processor), but the ram would likely need to be increased to 256MB.

In addition, if Shawn upgrades the OS and RAM he can then run Office 2004 for Mac Standard Edition and Student and Teacher Edition:

System Requirements :)

Dude, congrats. Good price for that machine. Just max out the ram (would be a good idea, and cheap) then get the newest OS X version. And if you ever found one of the cpu upgrades for a good price, then it wouldn't be too bad of a system.

perhaps, but i'd like to learn the OS more than anything. plus I think I can dual boot between OS 9 and OS X and there are plenty of OS 9 programs which will work with it. i have a lot of old dual format programs and games which will work, including warcraft 2. :D if all else fails I can always turn it into a server.

what can the processors be upgraded to? I will probably just max out the ram. it's amazing what a little extra ram can do. got XP running smoothly on a P2 266mhz laptop which I upgraded to 256mb. just had to disable a bunch of useless services. hopefully this will be no different.

I would put no less than 512MB in it. You can technically upgrade it to a 1Ghz G4 if you desire, however those upgrades are too expensive really. There is an auction for a 400Mhz G4 upgrade card on ebay now, but it will probably sell for the price of the entire computer you just got. Just a thought anyway...

I have a G3 400Mhz running, upgrade the ram to 768MB. I wish there were easy video card upgrades but there aren't too many options. For iTunes/web/Office it works fine, I'm thinking about putting OSX server on it.

Always wanted an Intel mac to play with but they've never been available. Finally found one that Apple would sell me. ;) My plan was to install XP and dualboot and it turned out great. Now I just need a nice big external drive, a gig of RAM, and a Core Duo 2.0 or so.

:D

Congrats on your purchase!
