Bought home theatre system in a box...

I know full sets in boxes are never great, but I bought my dad one and it sounds amazing... So I figured I'd get one for myself...

I bought a $510 Sony setup. I liked it because each component was seperate... The dvd could be swapped out, or the receiver, and all speakers are seperate from their wires so basically it was a seperate component system but in one box.

Anyways, the sub doesnt sound too great. Its a 200w powered Sony sub... I hear it more than I feel it. Unfortunately the receiver has no option to mess with crossover or frequency...

What can I do? Is there something cheap I can install between the receiver out and the sub?

I'd hate to buy a new sub.. Its only 8" but i dont think that would make a huge difference....

PS: I know something must be possible... Since my dad's sytem I bought him uses a passive sub and was cheaper, and booms way more than this...

What kind of room are you in? If his was maybe the main floor of the house with a basement below, it'll move around more than say in the basement itself. It's easier to shake a room on a wood frame rather than a concrete floor.

Well... I don't know why you'd ever buy one. They're a waste. These subs are tiny, underpowered, and boomy. Ewww.

There's always a way to adjust the sub output, even in cheap HTIBs. Possibly, when playing a DVD, you're not in DD mode, but stereo or something? Check the display to see if it says "DD" or "DolbyDigital", then go into the menus. It's in there somewhere.

You're forgetting the really obvious, a volume knob on the back of the sub itself.

Because not everyone cares about or can afford $3000 speaker set-ups.

We've been through this a billions times and it still holds true. That's why markets exist for HTIB, $50 printers, non-SLR cameras, Black & Decker power tools, Celeron processors, and every other "non-professional grade" product.

It's not rocket science.

Yeah but honestly one should not expect to achieve any sort of excellence from a HTiB. Something that will shake a room like that would likely cost as much or more than his whole system...a la SVS.

No, you shouldn't look for excellence, but you can still get decent performance for relatively little $$. My HTIB came from a display unit at Target for like $250 with a 5-disc DVD changer and a small sub I can feel more than hear. Not perfection, but suits me more than fine with my 50" DLP as a living room theatre.

But we all have different tastes and senses. It sounds as though he could replace his sub for ~$150 or so and have a system he likes.
