Bought home theatre in a box.. Not feeling the sub.

I know full sets in boxes are never great, but I bought my dad one and it sounds amazing... So I figured I'd get one for myself...

I bought a $510 Sony setup. I liked it because each component was seperate... The dvd could be swapped out, or the receiver, and all speakers are seperate from their wires so basically it was a seperate component system but in one box.

Anyways, the sub doesnt sound too great. Its a 200w powered Sony sub... I hear it more than I feel it. Unfortunately the receiver has no option to mess with crossover or frequency...

What can I do? Is there something cheap I can install between the receiver out and the sub?

I'd hate to buy a new sub.. Its only 8" but i dont think that would make a huge difference....

Ah, my favorite thing to laugh at what I walk around CC and invariably pass by HTIB's: voices playing through subs crossed at 200Hz 🙂

Good clean, accurate and fast bass is what makes a system for me. I'd rather use my TV's speakers with an entry level SVS sub than suffer through a HTIB's sub. However those start at $425, so if you're just getting started - Velodyne and DIY kits from Parts Express offer great value.

You should really consider returning the Sony and picking up an Onkyo HTiB. It'll probably be better and maybe even cheaper. Sony focuses too much on the aesthetic design and less on the actual performance of a lot of their products, and their speakers seem to be as guilty as any of their products. Then again, perhaps that is important to you. If the audio quality is, then I'd go with the Onkyo and then you can even change anything that you find to be weak (maybe the fronts, or the center or possibly the sub) and still end up at about the same price as the Sony, but with better sound quality.

There are a lot of subs you can get for ~$200 that will blow away that Sony. The Dayton 10" from PartsExpress for about $125 will do it even.

I used to hear that you basically couldn't find a good sub for less than $400, but I've learned thats false. There are a lot of brands that have a nice sub in the $200 price range. Mirage, Athena, Dayton, AV123 X-Sub, and there are a couple of others. No they're not going to beat the $400+ subs from HSU, Velodyne, and others, but they will blow just about any HTiB sub away.

I guarantee you'll be surprised at how much difference even the 10" Dayton makes.

There's not really anything that you could do to improve the Sony sub. Maybe they actually spent some money on the reciever or DVD Player or speakers and then cheaped out on the sub. The point is, its a low quality one that nothing but replacing could fix.

Onkyo HTIB boxes are excellent ..they have an online store that sells refurb..most of the reports..including the one I bought 3 yrs ago..were essentially/looked brand new and price was excellent

agreed. my rents did not want to go with seperates like i did (Harman Kardon, Ascend Speakers, and SVS subwoofer)... so I went shopping for a HTIB... in the ended up with an okyo htib... it was actually very nice... sub isnt as good as my svs but it gets the job done... definitly check them out.

doesn't the sub have a crossover and volume control of its own? turn down the crossover to around 60 Hz and crank the volume up to max, and you'll be in business.

The problem seems clear. Why people keep giving this den of snakes money is beyond me.

Sony used to be great, but people seem to forget that times change. But for the price, Sony is a decent buy.

Sure, if you like getting less than you pay for and enjoy supporting companies who illegally install vulnerabilities on your computer.
