Bought first LCD. Can't select Native Resolution

I bought an Acer AL2223W 22" Widescreen monitor. I connected it using DVI cable and selected 1024x768 resolution under display properties. This is the only available resolution that uses the whole monitor. (No black borders on sides/top)

The image quality is pretty low. I want to get it running at native resolution to improve image quality. I am running XP, and my video card is Radeon 7500 AGP 64M.

Any hints as to what to do? I've never done this...

Try rebooting/reinstalling your drivers. Also, if there's a disc included, see if there's an .inf file for the monitor. Your video card should be able to run 1680x1050 but no guarantees....

According to the Specs for that card, 1680x1050 isn't supported. I don't know if it depends more on the display driver whether or not it works.

The only good news is that you should be able to pick up a comparable video card like a GForce 3/4 for somthing in the area of $20-$30 shipped off of FS/FT if it turns out the 7500 really can't be made to support 1680x1050, however I suggest you first try upgrading the video driver to see of that resolution is added in newer versions & if that doesn't work, try installing somthing like Powerstrip & use it to create a custom resolution.

Uh oh...

Yah... apparently the original RADEONs and the 7000 line are a little iffy when it comes to widescreen resolutions. Do try newer drivers, though.

You can also try Powerstrip (the trial version is free), but you may need to upgrade to something newer if it's a hardware restriction. Something like a RADEON 9000 or GeForce 4MX would work fine.

Sounds like a problem with that old Radeon's not being able to display that resolution. Like others said, upgrading will certainly fix it. Considering a 9600XT goes for less than $50 this days, it woulnd't be a bad idea.

But be sure to try newer drivers first! I had trouble making my 7800GS display 1680x1050 on my 22" ViewSonic until I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers.
