Bought FC2 boxed version

Thought I could just enter my key, and then download it from steam. Is this not true? I tried, says my key is incorrect, several times over.

This is possible only for some games - for example Empire Total War and FEAR2

good news (maybe) - Steam has 50% off Far Cry 2 for today so if you live in USA you can get Steam version for 15$ (its more expensive in EU and rest of the world).

Except I bought the boxed copy for $50... dont want to buy it again. Just want it on Steam, was hoping I could just activate it.

Try to return it if possible and buy it from Steam - next time if you want to but it for your Steam account check if its possible to register baxed version to your Steam account. If not buy it from Steam.

Btw.: Why did you buy it for 50$ when you can buy it from Steam for 30USD (today for 15) ????

I really wish Valve would hop on the bandwagon of having every game I buy able to be activated on Steam.

While this would be nice, Steam would have no incentive to do that, considering they don't get a share of the profit when you buy games from box, and they have to provide bandwidth. and bandwidth = $$

I'm wondering why you'd want to tie any of your games to your Steam account. Wouldn't that prevent you from ever selling those games?

I don't even mind Steam that much and I don't have a problem with how it works, but in the cases where I already have the game separate, I'd probably prefer to keep it that way. On the other hand, there's something to be said for being able to easily back up or re-download all your games instead of having to reinstall them if you ever change computers.

I just got back from Iraq a month ago, and going to Afghan fairly soon. DVD/CD's is just more crap to keep up with, and the probability to loses them is high. I dont sell games, Im kind of a pack rat about games. I just want all the games I can on steam.

It's the game publisher that has to support it. There's only a few that do at the moment.

Yup, how can Steam tell if it's a valid license key without the publisher's help?

Steam could do it as 'goodwill' for their customers though, increasing brand loyalty.

It's a fair question though, what's to stop people from buying a game, registering it, and the re-selling the original DVD version - costing the publisher a sell?

There are conveniences. Any Steam games you own, you'll never have to worry about losing the actual game media or worrying about losing CD keys. You'll never have to worry about patching old games either.
