The color red comes from bugs on some food items also. I can't remember the exact name, but I see it every so often. Not a big deal AFAIC

This does not fully explain the cookie crumbs I found in a new can of shellac I bought.

carmine. yeah i avoid that too

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine

Carmine may be prepared from cochineal, by boiling dried insects in water to extract the carminic acid

its a tub of meijer brand cookies that have m&m type candies in them. just so u know

You must avoid almost all candies to escape shellac. Hint: those M&Ms contain shellac, not the cookie.

When you look at the ingredients of candy, look for Confectioner's Glaze.

You might puke if this really upsets you. Also, it is used for some pills.

Uh.. I'd rather have shellac in my cookies than almost any synthetic chemical.

Gelatin is made from bones!

Seriously. I hate bugs, but considering that there WILL be bugs in any piece of food that contains some kind of cereal grain, let alone a host of other food sources that bugs get mixed into... I'm just numb to this kind of thing.
Besides, it is natural, and it's multipurpose, and easily digestible.

Frankly, the part that seems weird is how the hell it even got discovered. "Hmm... look at that colored weird goop those bugs leave behind. Can we use it for anything."
The next day. "I wonder if it's edible."

Regardless, it's better than something produced synthetically, for sure.

There are bug parts in a lot of foods, and it is considered acceptable by the FDA so long as it isn't over a certain threshold.

It amuses me that if you buy certain 'whole foods' in industrial quantities (e.g. pumpkin seeds, psyllium husks, etc.) - you get a datasheet from the manufacturer (which the retailer certainly won't give you).

The datasheet will contain such information as maximum percentage of insects (usually less than 0.1% insect content), etc.

m&m type candies

Well.. there you go.

The 'shellac' listed as an ingredient is more commonly recognized as confectioners' glaze.

It is refined from the secretion of the lac insect and is free from all metallic and foreign matter contamination. This shellac glaze is guaranteed of food grade quality and is recognized as a safe edible ingredient. The reason that it is used in the manufacture is that it provides excellent protection against dampness and ensures that the product you buy is of the highest freshness and quality possible

Wow, you people are crazy. Just so you know, also look for xantham gum, it is made from the secretions of a certain bacteria that grows on vegetable matter. BTW, I love the stuff. It holds food together that otherwise would be a crumbly mess.
