on a budget? Freezer64

Slightly Bigger Budget but 2x more expensive with only a 1-2C gain? Scythe Ninja or Mine.

Wanna be badass get the swiftech apex 220 H2o kit, and you'll never go back to air. :p

my budget is about $40 shipped. I think they charge way too much for heatsinks!

Is the Ninja or ninja plus easy to install?

Thanks!

SI-120 hands down for less than $40 shipped. Most decent sinks requior removing the
mainboard to install a new metal back plate. This sink fits all current chips/boards
and it near the top for preformance.

The Ninja is not the easyest install.

You want easy, cheap and pretty good=Arctic Freezer Pro 64.

The Ninja is a very nice heatsink.
But due to its size its a bear to install and I believe you may even
Easy Installation-Just One Clip
Easy one clip and screwless design for the quick and easiest installation ever! (for socket 478)
True only for socket 478. The others need adapters and access to both sides of the motherboard.

The Vapo Chill Extreme is not even in the same league as the Ninja or even the XP 120.
I would list the Vapo Chill Extreme as a 2nd teir heatsink.
The Asetek VapoChill Extreme is a fairly decent first attempt by the company at targeting the majority of users on a budget. While I did not find its performance impressive by any means, credit should be given for its overall design and ease of installation.

I suggest the Freezer 64 Pro. Having installed both a Scythe Ninja and the Freezer, I can say that the Freezer is a lot easier to set up and install, and its performance is on par with that of the XP-90, so it's only a few degrees hotter than HSFs like the Scythe Ninja and XP-120. Newegg also has it for $25 right now, free shipping.

If you want the Ninja look to Newegg, they have free shipping on that too ($34 I think).

I didnt regret sticking a XP-90 on my 4400+ X2 @ 2.5GHz. Works like a charm and is, with the right fan, pretty silent too.

My vote goes to the ninja. Don't worry, you don't need access to the back of the motherboard to install it on S939. Just make sure you have plenty of room around the socket to maneuver.

Freezer 64 FTW!

its cheap at $25 shipped at the egg.....very easy to install, very quiet and performs close to those other more expensive, bigger, heavier fans.

How much cooling do you really need? Are you going to be doing some madly crazy OCing at voltages in excess of 1.5V? If not, then a Freezer or XP90 will suit you just fine. I'm doing 2.75 GHz at stock voltage on my AM2 3500+ and with a Freezer, my highest load temp (in Prime) is 42C.

Freezer 64 Pro is getting another recommendation from me. Easy install and won't be as cumbersome as a Scythe Ninja. Believe me when I say this. Hands on experience with both.

Or you could get out of the realm of aircooling and get a Swiftech WC kit ;)

But seriously though all the recommended HSFs are good, and it's up to you to decide if the extra $$ is worth it for maybe a few degrees drop in temps.

IMO the Ninja is you're best choice if it's compatible with your mobo. I've used 5 or 6 in the last few builds I've done and they are cooling monsters. I was able to run the Opteron 144 in my office rig passively at 2.9GHz, dual Prime stable. They really aren't all that hard to install. I've never had to use the included backplate they provide. The only thing I had to remove for installation was the ram. It was about as hard to install as an XP-120 IMO.

OMG that really dropped in price... probably because the SI-128 came out.

QFT. Just take out the two screws from the bracket around the CPU area and remove the bracket, then slap on the Ninja bracket in place and use two screws (may be able to use original but IIRC the Ninja comes with shorter ones that go on easier) to attach it. Then clip the Ninja on it like it was a socket 478 heatsink by clipping down on each corner. Actually pretty easy, though it may be a lot more difficult if you don't have much space around it.

For the OP if you're just running your Opteron at 2GHz, then get the Arctic Cooling unit. $25 shipped and likely the easiest to install - just clips in to stock mounts.
