My wife got a 3rd generation 40GB ipod on ebay the other day. The seller said he was throwing in the music on the ipod.

I installed itunes and the ipod appears just fine but all of the music is gray and can't be selected. I'm sure its the drm.

So here's the first question: My wife would maybe like to keep some of the music on the ipod but not all of it. Is there any way to delete music and add our own music. We don't care about copying the music from the ipod to our pc. However, I think my wife would like to keep some of the songs on the ipod.

Any way to enable access to the ipod through itunes for just deleting songs we don't want wasting space and for adding our own songs?

Second question:
If there's no way to accomplish the above objective, then I guess the next step is to erase the ipod entirely and start from scratch?

How would I do that?

Edit:
Note that the music already on the ipod plays fine on the ipod. But the music just can't be deleted from the ipod and we can't seem to add anything to the ipod.

Pretty sure you can't access it because you didn't purchase it. Sounds like a feature designed to keep you from using your ipod to transfer music to other peoples computers.

sharepod will let you put anything on the pod onto your HDD..

Then just format the ipod and you have a fresh start.

Just an FYI. What are you doing is illegal and frowned upon on these boards.
