Bought an A8-3850 based rig

It's on its way, folks! Got an A8-3850, 8GB of DDR3-1600, ASRock A75 PRO4 board, 2x 1TB WD Caviar Blacks, and an Antec True Power New 750W PSU for my 2nd PC -- my PC for when I'm home over school breaks and such.

I'm excited to see what Llano can do 😀

Note: I know I could've done better for price/perf if I'd just gone with an i3 2100, mATX board, and a Radeon 5670 or something, but this is purely because I'd like to play with this new hardware, bench it, try to OC it, and generally get a feel for what it can do. I've never had an excuse for a Llano, but now I do 🙂

If you wanted to try overclocking Llano, you could have waited for the imminent release of unlocked APUs.

judging from recent updates on amazon the unlocked llanos are 2-4 weeks away
sometime after christmas

I havn't read the review on that particular asrock motherboard
but I wouldn't expect any overclocking headroom, you might be disappointed.
Also be very careful raising the bclk, my asrock board corrupted the bios first time I raised mine and I had to order a bios flasher. Hope your board has the divider needed for 130+ blck.
go in very small increments like 1 or 2MHz don't try 130 until you confirm a higher divider exists

I needed to order this today so that I'd be able to build the system on Friday/Saturday. This will be my primary gaming platform while I'm on break -- the 5450 in my primary system just doesn't cut it!

Any games anyone wanna see benched on the APU?

I would like to see any and all of these 🙂

Deus Ex - Human Revolution
Witcher 2
Skyrim
Shogun 2
GTA 4
Mass Effect 2
Mount & Blade: Fire and Sword
Stalker: Call of Pripyat
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

I see you have a Llano as well...how's your experince overclocking that bad boy?

Well Lab Burst mode was a fake way for MSI to supposedly increase speeds up to 4GHz plus. I'm keeping it at 3GHz for now since it's just my HTPC. I love how my A6-3650 idles 20w lower than my i3-2100 did with the same PSU and harddrives.

I have Stalker: Call of Pripyat, GTA IV, and Mass Effect 2. Will be happy to provide benchmarks/impressions at different quality levels! I might buy DX:HR if the price comes down a bit more, but my disposable cash for a while went towards this beauty 🙂

Uh... no offense, but why didnt you just buy a better video card. That is a killer system otherwise.

But I guess I understand you wanting to experiment. I am not that interested in desktop llano, but I would like to get one of the A8 or A6 laptops to see what they can do. The price for those is really good if you find one on sale.

Rig is up! OC'd to 3.6GHz CPU, 732MHz GPU.

Initial impressions: This thing rocks! It can play Crysis @ a mix of medium and high settings at very acceptable framerates! Downloading more of my steam library onto this now for some more tests. This is fun. It's nice to see overclocks actually make a difference at this level 🙂

Okay, so I'm going to start running some canned benchmarks at the following settings:

CPU Speed: 3590MHz
GPU Clock: 744MHz
VCore: 1.456
Memory: 2x2GB Crucial DDR3-1333 (DDR3-1600 inbound!)
Resolution: 1600x1200 (my 1080P monitors are at school, but this is a taxing resolution!)

DOOM 3, Ultra Quality Settings, 0xAA: 51.98 FPS
Crysis, Medium Quality, 0xAA: 18.23 FPS

Whoah, so HOLY CRAP. Installed some DDR3 1600 in lieu of my 1333 running at 995MHz and the performance difference is staggering!!!!!!!

DOOM 3, same settings: 90 FPS

Running Crysis now...
