Bought a Widescreen HDTV today...

I picked up a 30" Philips HDTV today and was very impressed with what I saw in the store. I didn't have HDTV before getting the TV, so I really didn't know what to expect as far as picture quality once I got home.

Well, needless to say, the picture quality (with standard analog cable) looks worse that I expected. I've been doing some reading, and apparently standard TV on a HDTV looks worse than a non-HDTV set according to many.

I got on Comcast's site tonight only to find out HDTV isn't available in my area. Great, that's what I get for not doing my homework before buying the TV.

It's kinda disappointing to see the excellent HDTV signal in the store only to see the crap quality when I get home.

My wife has been hitting me up for digital cable. Would getting DC help with the picture quality?

Also, would getting a standard non-HDTV set be recommended if we choose to stick with analog cable?

Yeah, most areas have at least over the air HDTV. I'd be surprised if you have absolutely no access.

NE Mississippi. Where it seems like we lag behind the rest of the country by 3-4 years when it comes to the good stuff. Fvck!

..I got the 30"Sceptre at costco and same thing..standard analog cable/over the air looks bad up close but if I back off to about 15-20 feet it's not bad. My dvd's look great thru the S-video connector..so it's used mostly to watch dvd's..tv shows sluck so I don't bother wit it.

Type in your information and it will give you the HDTV channels that are broadcast in your area. Post back the results...

You better hope that the Philips has an on-board ATSC Tuner and that there are a significant number of local HDTV channels being broadcast in your area.

A couple days ago, I bought a DVICO Fusion5 HDTV card for my computer... bought a TERK TV5 HDTV Antenna. Let's see, today, I watched the Red Sox-Cubs game on FOX in HD... watched Tarzan on ABC in HD and watched Crossing Jordan on CBS in HD. Tomorrow, I will watch ArenaBowl XIX on NBC in HD... and Game 2 of the NBA Finals on ABC in HD. God I love this...

Man, even we have HDTV over the air, we just have not upgraded our 6 year old 19" Toshiba!

Someday maybe I will actually watch TV to see what all the fuss is about...

If your TV has an integrated tuner, get something inexpensive like a Silver Sensor and see what HD stations you can pull in OTA.
