So I bought an iPad mini. In my defense, I had no idea about the "Locate my iPad" security feature in the OS. Anyway, I get it home, try to do a factory reset and I cant because this iPad is tied to someones account. I get ahold of the person who sold me it, they tell me that it wasn't theirs, it was their friends who is in jail now. I was able to verify this through the sheriff's website I am unable to get ahold of the person in jail and now the seller is ignoring all texts and calls from me. I was able to get ahold of the person whos in jail's mother and she can't really help me either, she said she would try and get the pass from her daughter. I called apple and they basically said write a letter and hope the chick in jail gives you the pass or else you SOL. From what I can tell the person in jail really did sell the iPad to their friend and just forgot to remove their account. Now I basically have a useless iPad and am out 300 bucks

TL,DR: make sure the iPad is completely wiped clean before you buy it used.

Uhm, bull crap, that doesn't ensure anything unless you can get to the home screen after it's wiped. Next time run the serial through: https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/

OP, you are SOL unless you can get the password, or proof of purchase. If you have proof of purchase, you can call Apple and get it unlocked. The owner in jail likely won't help you. You might have better luck getting the invoice from the mother, if she has access to her stuff.

Good luck.

I'm curious the full details of the circumstance you bought it. Sounds like the seller wasn't honest from the start, and just sold you their problem. I personally think it's STILL their problem, and they need to return the money and take the locked iPad back.

Sounds like you're able to contact the parties involved enough to know who they are/where they are, so you should be able to insist on this and make it happen.

Checking the info of the chick who is in jail, perhaps that iPad could be a stolen item/sold for more drugs. History of theft, robbery, drug possession/ use at an age of 21. :(

Isn't $300 kinda high for a used iPad mini?
Depends on the model and storage, but yeah, considering you can get a new iPad mini Retina for $299. However, I guess she needed that $300 for bail.

Lindon Justice Court Case # NEW from PC

Bail:
$300.00 Cash Only
58-37A-5(1) Use Or Possession Of Drug Para Arrested/Held For: New Charge

Yeah, I did DFU, but since she synced to iTunes its still locked to her. I sent the chick a letter to the jail. I am going to keep trying to get a hold of her. I actually paid 240 for 32gb mini 2. I am not sure if its stolen, it doesn't appear to be. I dunno. I am going to keep trying to get her password

Get your money back if you can. See if you can threaten charges for selling stolen goods.

She claims its not stolen and the original owner sold it to her, but they didnt look at the icloud lock. Which could be true, because neither did I. I didn't even know about it. My next option is probably small claims court, she said she is still going to try and get the password. And I am waiting a few days to see if I get a reply to my letter. The only other issue is, I am not sure where she lives or work. I have her name and criminal record and phone. But nothing to locate her.

Where the frack are you finding these people? And then handing your money over to them?

Catherine Kaggie:
Methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute, and endangerment of child

Cammie Beck:
Robbery and drug possession

I guess buying electronics on Craigslist on from meth heads isn't really a good idea.

P.S. Note the "robbery" arrest.

The person that sold it to you simply scammed you. They realized that they had an item that they couldn't use, so they found a way to scam someone else into buying it. I bought a new 32GB Mini Retina last week for $299.

On a positive note, it looks like the seller lost about 15 pounds between the summer and fall arrest. Good for her.

Small claims court.

Yeah, this is probably what you're going to end up doing. It really does hit home the message of "buyer beware", especially when you're buying electronics off sites like Kijiji and Craig's List. Unfortunately, you got scammed by a meth head looking for quick bail money.

The other option is to take it in to Apple and try and explain the situation. I don't know how far you'd get though. They might be sympathetic seeing how both parties you bought it from had a criminal record and a history of shenanigans. I wouldn't hold your breath though.

I wouldn't hold your breath either about getting the password from the broad in jail.
