I had 512MB and added another 512MB, now 1GB of RAM.

My system runs on 133MHz Bus speed, which is PC2100. I was going to buy PC3200 so it can be used in my future machine if I make one, but they had PC2700 OCZ(is this an ok brand?) for $50 after rebate, so I went for that.

Was this a bad decision?

I've run PC2700 on a PC2100 before. It works fine, as far as stability goes. Of course, you aren't getting the most performance for your money, but if you plan to use it later, it will all work out. The problem is, depending on how far away "later" is, your PC2700 probably won't be for a "new" system anymore-- so while it isn't a bad decision, I wouldn't say it's a great "money saver", but it will work just fine.

As far as OCZ goes, yeah they are right up there with the other memory brands. It's only when you get up to the really high end, low latency stuff that you usually notice a difference.

While on the subject of memory and money saving, has anyone actually used the new Crucial Ballistix? I've heard that for the money, they are the best performance that you can get-- granted that any Corsair XMS is going to be Top-Top of the line, I've heard that the difference is nominal. Input? I have 1GB Corsair XMS XL 3200, myself, just curious to see how the new Ballistix compare.
