Bought a PC Power and Cooling 500w silencer

Yeah, I know it can be on the loud side under load, but I don't see myself pulling that many watts out of it, really.

I got this since newegg is shipping it free and offered $15 off total price, bringing it to $64 shipped which I feel is good for a 500W unit. I feel like I'm going to outgrow my EA380 when I replace my video card.

So is this unit a huge mistake?

Why would it be a mistake? As long as it is enough for whatever system you want to use it with, then it is a good PSU.

Hehe. I know. It's just that I've been reminded politley here of better choices in the past. I don't keep up on all types of components and a PSU is something I could easily buy without making the _best_ decision so to speak. Mainly, I was worried that someone like Zap would point out that there is a 600W model for less money or that the OEM of my PSU also makes an identical version for another brand but much cheaper. But, you know, I don't really think that will be the case, now that I think about it. The price I paid is good, it's got plenty of watts and the unit is supposedly SLI ready (not that I'm going to use SLI).

Thanks for the reply though.

I guess my main concern will be fan noise, but I don't think that will be too much of an issue unless I'm doing serious encoding or something and drawing a lot of watts for an extended period of time.

Well the old Antec Earthwatts 500W that was made by Seasonic was more or less exactly the same internally down to the Capacitors though the heatsinks are a little different. The PC P&C has a different fan, has fully sleeved cables, is rated for 1A more on the 12V rail and IMO looks a little better with the black finish. FYI the Antec Earthwatts has now changed to a Delta OEM so it is no longer the same, and based on the price you paid at newegg, it is no cheaper anyway...in fact at the moment it is more expensive on newegg.

Sure, if you had shopped around, you may have found a better deal at some obscure vendor, but I'd have to say for $65 you ought to be proud of what you bought.

There is ALWAYS going to be something better or cheaper. That's how it is with computers. 😉

My only suggestion is that NEXT time you ask first, buy later. You did it backwards. 😛

Whats interesting is this prevailing thought that is just wrong that because Seasonic makes PSU`s for various companies that supposedly whats inside is exactly the same or almost the same ansd the workmanship has to be the same.......

You and I both know that it is very possibly to have 2 different PSU`s with different names made by the same company and when they are reviewed the results are drastically different???

In fact it could be called FUD to say that since both are made by Seasonic they must have the same brand Caps and the the same workmanship.

I know you didn`t say that exactly but just because 2 different PSU`s are made by the same company all that means is that they are made by Seasonic....we cannot even assume that the workmanship would be the same...can we?

I will link a couple of reviews with pictures of the Antec EA500 and the PC P&C 500W, you can come to your own conclusions based on the pictures. Capacitors are the same brand, PC P&C appears to use a 400uF on the Primary versus Antec's 330uF. Secondary caps are the same...OST RLX

EA500

PC P&C 500W

Here is what jonnyguru had to say about it.

Both based on Seasonic SS platform

Not identical, but there is no doubt they are very very similar internally...or at least were now that the Earthwatts is made by Delta

Threw it in today. Very nicely made. Rock stable. Very impressed.

It's pretty much silent as I've played with it. While under load I haven't noticed it getting loud. Admittedly, I have't had much time to play with it.
