Some time ago I posted about buying a BMW or a Nissan. Well, the Nissan was sold and the BMW didn't work out, so I thought about it and lowered my budget.

Picked up a car which I paid cash for, and spent the last four hours driving. Still smiling too.

It's a 1989 Toyota Supra. Automatic + non-turbo, but it has a removable roof and stereo. I'm happy.

But now I need to burn some CD's, and ask AT about this car. Anyone know of a good forum for this car, or something about it?

For the record, she had a metal headgasket professionally installed early this year with the appropriate torque applied (iirc 65 ft-lbs), not the factory-spec 45 ft-lbs. The timing belt was done at that time as well, and she runs REALLY nicely.

Oh, and I have a four-day weekend this year. Hell yes.

Edit: Looks just like this, minus the black front lip. I'll get pics when I find a camera.

Edit 2: Found the album the seller put up:

manual swap, w58 can be bought for like $100

great idea!

A friend of mine had a turbo back in the day and I think he went trough three trannies....

er transmissions not unics...

Regarding your car take some cell phone pics of the interior and body so we can help you and list mileage as well. I would spend whatever is necessary to bring maintenance up where it should be. Dont forget to have the suspension checked out as well.

my aunt had one of those, sweet cars. hers was the turbo/ man model, which i thought was funny considering the owner. she practically gave it away when she sold it, i didnt find out until afterwards. id have bought it.

It would've been cool to get a turbo/manual model, but the N/A model has some pep to it, esp. in the twisties...

Burnt over a tank of gas and covered about 225 miles this weekend, and for the first time had people looking at my car. Definitely a good feeling haha. I smell coolant from time to time when driving and had to top off the coolant over the weekend. When the car hits redline some lights on the dash flash and then it shifts. The cruise control will drop a gear and keep the engine around 4k when cruising at 70mph, but when I modulate the speed with my right foot the revs stay around 3k.

The interior has some nicks and worn buttons, and the windows roll up slowly. When I picked up the car she wouldn't start, so the seller gave me a jump and $100 for a new battery.

Other than those bits, the car runs smooth and drives great. The suspension is in very good shape and the TEMS works as it should. I plan on getting a battery before a roadtrip this weekend and have a gallon of coolant in the car. There is a hissing sound coming from the back of the engine bay, but I've only heard it twice over the weekend.

I still like the car and think that these issues are mainly minor and addressable before winter. Not looking at power mods until the car is sorted, but I like the idea of a W58...

Oh and the car has ~135k miles. I don't own a camera but here's --some pics the seller put up--

saw one yesterday driving to school, it was some middle aged white guy driving it, gave him a thumbs up for interesting car

now - twin turbo 2j swap (transmission swap is obligatory)

Yeah I was looking into it, it doesn't sound too hard to do. I might go for an automatic though, getting a good engine w/ 6-spd is like 2x the price of a TT/auto. It won't be the automatic which Mark III's come with, they aren't particularly reliable once you start adding power. Plus it's not like she's going to be the only car in my life, I'd like to have a muscle car of sorts in the future. 😉

Cool, looks like it's in good shape. What's the plan for the car?

Drive it, this is a car afterall. 😛

The plan is mainly just that though. I would like to swap in a stronger motor and transmission (2JZ-GTE + auto?) and as time/budget allow I'll fix all the little things, but I don't foresee much happening for a long time.

I'm thinking I'll pick up a second car which will be the DD while major upgrades happen with the Supra, and then have them switch roles. My Dad had a '74 Cutlass Supreme droptop, and I still love the lines they have. A coupe with an LS3 would be pretty wicked, boosted to somewhere around 560hp. 70's Buick Gran Sports are also nice-looking.

Not a big fan of messing with the original lines of the car, mostly just fixing up the interior and engine and making a sleeper. The Supra might see some racing once I'm more confident in its durability. The coolant thingy and dash lights going wacko at redline are unusual, so I'm taking it easy.

And for the record, I'm definitely a fan of cars made before 2000-ish. Something about the roughness of them relative to new cars is appealing, dare I say anti-establishment? 😉

I too love the raw nature of some older cars. My 98 Boxster is less refined, has a much more spartan interior, smaller displacement engine, lighter, with less kit than the new ones but outdoes its newer siblings in the fun to drive category.

early eighties cars are near and dear to me as well since I lusted after so many in my youth. GT40, 80s Ruf slant nose with whale tail will someday be mine for nostalgias sake alone.

Nothing like hammering a four barrel small block in second or third gear and not just losing traction but sense of direction and space time..
