I bought the HP 9110i today & have been playing around with it.
Is it ok to surf the net & or do some basic multitasking while I'm burning?

Can you just copy over a cd-RW or do you have to take the time to format it? (Adaptec Direct Cd says it can take an hour to format a disk)

Also I tried to make a music cd but the files are mp3s & they wont show up to copy them ,I think it said wave files only.

Right now I'm recording to hard drive then to CD burner.I can put my old CD rom back in & record CD to CD,seems like it might be a bit quicker than going to hard drive first. Can you still get good quality & is it any faster?

CII 533@936mhz
256megs Kingston PC100
15g.WD 7200rpm HD

Thanks, Toro

I wouldnt recommend doing other stuff while u are burning... cuz burning requires quite a bit of resources... if you have other programs running, u can easily run out of resources and the burn might not be successful...

Many other CD burning programs can read mp3's directly and burn them onto an audio CD... I think new version of EZCD can do that too... other programs like Nero can do it also...

If u use CD to CD the quality would remind the same... but whether it is faster depends on the speed of your other CD-Rom...

i think directcd (packet writing) requires overhead and file structure... so the cdrw has to be formatted once (long time) before using it as a "directcd". otherwise a regular cdrw can be burned over and over again once they are quick erased and used as a normal disc.

only way to find out if you can multitask and burn at the same time is trying it. i burn and surf, icq, email, netzero, and etc. with nero. havent got a coaster. i am not doing photoshop, playing games or anything... just a little bit of "multitasking". of course your results will vary with your system and its components.

i am using a yamaha 8x with 4mb buffer, harddrive to writer. does that count?

cd to cd?... i doubt i could multitask if i did that.

Thanks for the replies,I just installed CloneCd nice little program but only records @ 2x speed on the Demo. With these 2 burning programs installed do you think another like Nero would be compatible? .I thought I heard somewhere that Adaptec Direct Cd does'nt like other burning programs.
I noticed that when cpoying an image file with the Adaptect program it never saves the image on my hard drive it's just gone after it copies to disk anyonelse run in to this?

I had some trouble with the Adaptec program at first should the dma box be checked or empty in device manager?
Thanks Toro

SCSI works best when trying to multitask and burn. I have pushed my system really hard while burning with my SCSI and haven't made any coasters yet. The fact that I'm running W2K doesn't hurt either. IDE is more sensitive to performing other tasks while burning in the background, however if you've got a decent computer you should be okay.

youseelabruin already said the only real way to find out, try it. CDR media is dirt cheap so if you waste some while experimenting it's no biggie.

It's true... Adaptec software does not like Nero... these two programs have conflict with each other and won't work together... So if you are going to try out Nero you better have Adaptec software uninstalled first...

I've been running both since I've had my burner with no problems at all. So it is possible. I cannot offer any explanation for those that do have problems other than maybe they set something up wrong or maybe it's more of a burner-related issue.

I install Adaptec first then apply the necessary patches. Nero is installed second, I don't know for sure if the order makes a difference but it's how I did it and mine works.

Ok tried some surfing while burning a backup of Win98,went off without a hitch.:)

It took 9 minutes to do the disk image to hard drive & another 10 to burn to a new cd. So almost 20 minutes for a complete disk, is that about the right time for a HP 8x4x32,(C533@936, 256k ram)That was with Adaptec create a CD.

Not that I'm in a race but it seems like it might go faster,Cd to CD.Just don't really want to reinstall my old Cd.

So which is faster CD to CD, or Image to hard & back to burner?
Thanks Toro :D

Personally I think CD is better either way. Even if you're CD-ROM won't transfer data fast enough at leat you can put both the target and destination CD's in and walk away without having to worry about switching halfway through the copy process.

yup, i agree with Psychoholic... but if you are like me, my reader sucks (4x) and you would likely get more bufferunderun cd to cd and multitasking. even more if they are on the same ide like mine. if i get the image on my faster cdrw the write, the total time is faster.
another way to set up a burn and walk away is... do cd in the reader to hd via image... then burn to writer from hd. less chance of a buffer prob.

its the same as doing cd-copy (from reader to hd, but not directly) but not "on the fly".

yeah.. it doesnt make much sense... so ignore this if you want :)

ah.. just try it and see.

damnit.. Psychoholic said the what i tried to say above. its too late for me. time for bed.

I also just bought the 9110i yesterday. So far its great. However the supplied software has many limitations. SIMPLE BACKUP worked great to backup my HD but will only backup ALL HDs on the system instead of selected drives/partitions and can't backup network drives.
Other threads have mentioned ULTRABAC, POWERQUEST, and others I don't recall the names of. Will any of these other programs allow creation of custom disaster recovery discs?
The new model 9150i has a more feature filled version (4.0) of Simple backup that may do what I want to do but is not availible separately at HPs website. I assume it is just a program licenced by HP. If so does anyone know who makes it?

Also dl CloneCD and installed. Simple and straight forward to use

metoo,My adaptec software was version 3.5 & on Adaptecs website it looks like you can upgrade to 4.0.My downloads were the wrong version so it would'nt work. I tried several times but it kept giving me an older version than what I had, not the newer 4.0,

Why don't you check it out & see if you have better luck than me, Let me know if you get it to upgrade.

I too, just bought the HP9110i & maybe one of you might help..
Everything on and in the package claims this is the correct model, but it doesn't look like the picture on the HP home page and the model number is different (C4462). I bought it this week at Office Depot. Is this a mistake or are there different versions? Appreciate the feedback.

metoo you should look into disk and partitioning cloning software such as Norton Ghost IMO. You can create an entire image for disaster recovery. The only drawback is it works under DOS. You will need a DOS boot disk with NT (a Win98 boot disk will work) or you can boot to DOS in Win9x. The network drive backups will be a little tricker since you need to use a network client for DOS. It can be done however, if you're interested you can look here for more details. Hope this helps.

Toro 45 there are actually two version numbers for the Adaptec Software. One for Easy CD Creator and one for Direct CD. I am assuming from what your saying you are refering to Easy CD Creator. If that's the case you cannot upgrade through downloads on their site to the 4.x version.

I have Multiple Burning programs installed on both my computers, and not a problem. I use Nero, Adaptec, CloneCD(demo ver. :( ) and NTI CD-Maker Pro, which is the Best for making Video CD's, HD Backups, and Bootable CD-Rom's. For me, Nero seems to work the best for burning MP3's to CD, it can be a little slower than Adaptec's but i've NEVER had to throw away a disk with it. Here's my Problem, none of these Programs are "Red Book" compatible. NTI Claims that it is, but it's not. I sent a CD of some of my bands stuff to a Dupe house, and they couldn't read the PQ Sub-Codes off of it, and there is no way to Modify these Codes in any of these Programs. But i'd have to say, for most Applications, the I think the Newest Version of Nero is worth the Purchase.

Happily Burining for 6 Years now in RI!! :)

toro45 Thanks I'll check out Adaptecs website and see whats there. Bummer tho if psychoholic is right.

psychoholic Thanks for the tip. Ghost is something I should have anyway I suppose. I have shied away from Symantec products ever since I foolishly installed CrashGuard:disgust:

from reading this thread it looks like OD's clearance on the 9110i was popular.(kimo the model# for the 9110i is C4459)TextkimoTextText

metoo,
Thnx for the feedback. I returned the drive to OD (even tho they insisted C4462 was the correct model). Just have to keep on looking. KIMO
