Bought a krp-500m

Went through a bunch of pioneer's dealers from their site and eventually found a local-ish one who had a display model with very low hours. Got it for 1650.

What a beautiful machine. When it is dark out the black bars and bezel both blend into my wall, so it looks like a floating image in space, absolutely outstanding.

I'm happy to have upgraded from my 4 year old 32" syntax olevia lcd black friday special.

Congrats! Now get the ISF patch and get that thing calibrated. 🙂

Congrats!

Seriously, ControlCal, then try one of the many settings posted. If you don't like it, go professional.

yep, get it calibrated. I got similar deal 1650. I forget what I paid for calibration, 300? Worth it for the piece of mind : P.

What will suck is how watching television on other people's tv's will become unbearable.

There are some torrents out there for 2009 demo disk...I'd find it, really shows off the tv.

I'll need to save up a little money for a pro calibration. I might try to play with the ISF stuff myself for a bit though. For the time being I am very satisfied with the picture. The only thing I don't like is that it really shows how bad some tv shows are compressed on Dish, it really doesn't mask any flaws, which is good.

Wow though, Sunshine looks so incredible.

ControlCal is about $100. Well worth it. There are a LOAD of calibration settings for the 500m online. There's a good chance you'll be happy with one of those.

If you invest in a panel this good to use someones elses settings would not do it justice. Get a real calibration that gets your set right. There are variances at the panel level and small revisions and batches that vary wildy in the same exact SKU.

You wont be dissapointed.

Have you thumbed through the pro calibration settings that people have posted for the 500m? They're remarkably similar.

The only ones with real large differences seem to be the ones where people are calibrating the panels for themselves.

IMHO, when pro calibration settings are so similar across the board, I see far less of a value getting one. When they vary quite a bit, they make much more sense.

I think that going with ControlCal and using someone's pro settings is a very reasonably first step. From there, tweak settings to your individual tastes and viewing conditions.

If you're still unsatisfied, then it makes much more sense to pay the $250-300 or so for pro calibration from one of the KRP specialists.
