i wake up this morning...go to turn on my computer - DEAD...strange...just worked last night...everything else (monitor, etc. on teh same line) is working...pull the PSU you, rip it open, look at it, spit on it, and go pick up a new ultra-cheap 300watt generic PSU...got it for $30 CDN.

without even thinking about looking at the thing at the store, i bring it home and notice the bloody crap has only intake fan on the bottom but no exhaust fan whatsoever!...just a grill at the back.

let's just say my mobo temp. is now being reported as being a WHOPPING 48 celcius!...i believe it was around 10 celcius less w/ my old PSU...disgusted.

my poor little computer...i can hear the components dying.

here's the solution:

i just opened up the PSU, reversed the fan so it's blow into the PSU (it was exhausting the hot PSU air into the case!), and now the thing is running 12 celcius cooler at 36 under load.

u gotta wonder if these people think about which way the fan should be blowing...they're probably on selling like thousands of these things a month...

That's how the PSU fan was set up on an old Compaq that I have. I did the exact same thing a while back. Are the manufacturers idiots or something?

From your description above, I had no idea that the intake fan was blowing the wrong direction. :Q

The original ATX spec called for the PSU fan to blow INTO the case, as did all the case fans. This provided positive pressure inside the case, forcing the air OUT all the cracks and holes in the case. This was supposed to limit dust accumulation and to ensure airflow across all the components in the system. While this looks good on paper, it just doesn't work in the real world.

If you bought a PSU with the fan blowing INTO the case, it is probably very, very old. The manufacturer did not make a mistake making it, it's just that the original ATX spec called for the fan to be that way. I wouldn't mess with it, I'd just return it to where you bought it. If it is an original ATX spec PSU, it probably won't power new MB/processors properly and will just cause more trouble than it's worth. Order a quality Antec or Enermax online, and in a few days you'll be up and running with NO PSU problems.

i have to highly doubt that it's old - after all, it's a 300 watt...most older ATX PSUs were under 300...in fact, most were 250 or less..

it has a 12v P4 connector on it...

i wasn't aware that that's the original ATX spec...u'd think that people try these things in the real world before making them standardized specs...u'd think that anyway..but u'd be wrong.

too late anyway, i opened the PSU and broke the warranty seal...i'm stuck w/ it 🙂

btw, ran SETI all night and mboo temp is only 34....sure beats that 48 yesterday

thats a pretty big drop with 1 fan changed around. i wonder which way the fans in my antec are blowing?
