it doesn't. just because they are cheaper than accord's and camry's doesn't mean that they blow. the last generation's design was way better than the old accord/camry, and the V6 was more powerful too.

however now that mits is in financial trouble, and the new galant looks bloaty, it shouldn't really compete with accord/camry/altima. however galants should sell for significantly cheaper than them, making them a very good value

i'm actually considering to buy a used 00'-03' galant, or a 00' or so altima. both are decent cheap mid-size's

Because they are lemons.
We had 3 Galants in our family because they all started out nice.
All 3 transmissions gave out at about 100,000 miles. Luckily, one was covered under the extended warranty and they rebuilt it (took about a month).
Plus, little things in the car fall apart. You'll see a cap here, a screw there, etc. And I couldn't figure out where these things belonged.
I've had friends who owned Mitsubishi's as well...they hated their cars, too.

My suggestion is to go with something else.

yeah their build quality rep is just not up to par with other japanese companies, but it should be better than or equal to dodge/ford and the rest.

i have a '94 galant that's still kickin. transmission blew and we had to replace it, but i don't think there's been anything else major aside from that. this has to have 250k by now, and still gets 30 mpg. only bad part is that new trans doesn't perform like original = no acceleration 🙁

Because they are crap. Generally one assumes, and gets, some level of quality with an import, but not so with Mitsubishi. Their resale sucks. Their reliability sucks. Their company sucks.

ohhh no.. a transmission blows after 100,000 miles, so not fair...

geez, at least its not like the engine blew. besides if the transmission goes, but you dont have to repair much of anything else on a regular basis, I dont see how thats a bad trade off.

And arent used transmissions just a few hundred bucks?

I'd rather have another POS Ford than a Mitsu at least I know the company will be there tomorrow if i need parts... BTW if your not careful some Dodges/Chryslers are re-skinned Mitsus.

I didn't base my statement on whattaguy's experiences, just the fact that mitsus are crap. A used tranny might be a few hundred bucks if you buy it off the back of a truck, but generally even a rebuilt one installed will cost you well over $1000.

Don't take my word for it; JD power, consumer reports, etc. will all tell you the same.

Unlike, say, Honda, Nissan, or Toyota. 🙂

rebuilding an auto can easily cost a few thousand.

You make it sound like getting a transmission replacement is nothing...

I had a 2000 that I just traded in.

I was never impressed with the car, but I was never disappointed either. It was average.

Bahahahahaha......are you kidding? A coworker has a 01 Galant (his wife's actually) - it doesn't even meet the "standards" that my cousin's 94 Camry has. I thought by sitting in it maybe it was a 95-97 model year car....little did I know until I asked that it was a 2001. It was and is a piece of sh!t, like most Mitsu cars. Our one and only experience with purchasing and maintaining a Mitsu convinced us never to buy them again. The only Mitsu worth owning is a DSM.

I thought Mitsubishi is DSM.

I don't think that should refer to Eclipses before if that's what you meant.

basically that sums it up. it's just an ok, average car, selling for thousands less than a honda/toyo/nissan for similar specs

look on edmunds, the galant, esp. the post 00' model, gets around a ~8 score. that is pretty good for a car that you can now buy for about $6k with 70k miles or so. at that price you'd be hard-pressed to find a 94' accord with higher milage.

i mean the galant was generally made to compete with lower trims of accord/camry and altima, and does a decent job at it. it is just meant for people transport and that's pretty much it.

and ford? give me a break. you are actually saying you'd prefer a big fat heavy taurus, from a company that has numerous recalls every year (read: focus), over a galant?

it's just my personal preference. i know that camry and accord's have better interior than the galant. but as for buying a used car, a used galant is a bargain for what little you pay for.
