Bought a Fuji FinePix F100fd and am unhappy with it...

Bought the F100fd and am very unhappy with the pictures it takes. Low light pictures are terrible! It advertises a manual mode in the camera OS, but there is nothing manual about it...can't set my F-stop, can't set my shutter speed, nothing...just my ISO.

What would be a good step up from this camera that would offer me a little higher price, but better quality photos and better manual mode?

Thanks!

low light pictures are going to be terrible from tiny sensors. just the laws of physics. the F30 has a better reputation than the F100 did but a lot of that was from pixel peepers viewing at 100% and comparing rather than viewing prints.

the lx3 may be a bit better with it's brighter lens and actual image stabilization. canon's new S90 may also be a good option. but you may not be satisfied by even those notable attempts at building a good compact camera.

What are you comparing the low light pictures to? The F100fd I got for the GF takes great low light photos compared to the other canon elphs and other small point and shoots.

You're not going to get much better low light in that price range. The lx3 will be better not only because of the things ElFenix mentioned, but its larger sensor. It is 3 times the price of the F100fd though. You're asking for some big improvements for just a little price jump. Give us better numbers to work with. Under 300, under 200, whether you'd be ok with used equipment or any size restrictions.

Boy, I wonder if we're using this thing wrong. It is taking some terrible low-light photos. I usually just set it to "AUTO" and call it a day...and it has taken all right photos sometimes, but, more often than not, bad photos.

Agreed. Post a few examples of what you consider "alright" and a few of the "bad" photos so we can see what you are seeing.

I am going to try to find an assortment of photos that were posted on Facebook.

I played around with the camera a lot when we first got it, and I noticed that if it was really, really dark in the room (bar or lounge setting, or outside during late night) it took a great picture. However, when I got into a room where there was a soft white light, like 2700K temperature, the pictures looked grainy and noisy. I will try to find some of those pictures and post them.

Please post a resized jpeg or something that we can at least read EXIF data.

You should wait until the Canon S90 is out before you jump to purchase anything new, imho.

Hi everyone, I wanted to update you all the camera situation.

I think I decided to keep the camera. After playing around with it a bit this weekend, I realized I think the bad photos we had were just out of one batch. It was in a room where there was a soft white light and everything looked terribly mis-colored.

This weekend, though, I took some photos for a Craigslist ad and a few other things (get togethers, bar outings, whatnot) and it turned out to be taking some seriously awesome pictures.

I haven't heard about this, but I'll read up on it and check it out, for sure!

Thanks everyone
