Bought a 802.11N router, sucked, back to Linksys W54G

So after years of using my old W54G with WEP I bought a new Medialink from Amazon. Wow, what garbage. Fluctuating pings, time outs, etc. I plugged my Linksys back in and it worked great.

So here is my question, am I an idiot for using a G router that only supports WEP? What else could I try and not break the bank?

It depends, if the Router does what you need, and security of the Wireless connection is No important to you, then keep using it in good health.

In my book it is the opposite. "Idiots" 🙄 are people that spend money when a new device is Not functionally needed.

On the other hand see what this page state about the Wireless security.

If you do need more functionally out of your Wireless, explain what if you need help to make a choice

I used a WRT54GL for years, then switched to a Linksys E3000 for dual-band N, then to an ASUS for a higher-powered setup since I moved to a bigger place and needed the coverage. Basically, I've always gone for something that support DD-WRT.

I've got a couple E3000 routers for sale that do dual-band wireless great. They're stable too with DD-WRT.

I'm an idiot, confirmed 😀

I just thought newer = better, but I guess I was wrong. Do I need N? No, 54Mbps is fine, I don't do much beyond streaming stuff from my 20Mbps Comcast. I know WEP is a joke, but I guess the real possibility of it being exploited is very low.

I also have the Diamond 300N repeater, which seems to work fine to extend coverage.

In the end, it was a new house so I thought new equipment was in order. I guess I'll get my $50 back and stick with what I have. Thanks guys.

If you do decide to go to N - and you do get better range with N besides faster data rates - I recommend staying with Linksys. They have some $60 or so routers (without all the media stuff) that are dual-band N and work very well. I've bought 3 of them for friends & family with no problems.

Do you need N? I guess the first question is do your clients have N capability? If not then the answer would be no. 🙂

G is probably faster than your internet connection so that not a big issue.

WEP can be hacked in less than a minute, how much do your trust your neighbors?

The WRT54G was a premium product when it came out. Buying a cheapie to replace it will result in these kinds of results.

There are a lot here that swear by $20-30 devices, but they require custom firmwares and the like.

The top dogs by ASUS and Cisco/Linksys are great. I own the E4300, but had the ASUS external antenna'd model been out at the time, I'd have used it.
