Hi !

I got my gf a laptop off ebay.

I told the guy to ship to my sisters in the US (im in can) since iw as going to go see her friday, he agreed to ship first thing monday morning.

He told me it would take 2-3days max.

I left sunday (31 oct ) with no laptop, so i decided to contact the seller in a email. In this email i asked for a tracking number and what not.

I got a email today:
chris,

So my big question is, is he responsable? I mean anyone with a head gets a trck # with anything over 20$ no?

He should've spent the extra few cents on tracking, it's not automatic with the USPS. He has a receipt though, so he can initiate a track for it, if it is indeed lost. Give it some time, then go to Paypal. If you never received it then there's a very good chance he never sent it, I've had zero items lost through the USPS, although it can happen.

I'd file this under poor communication.
Regardless of what I buy, I know how it's going to be shipped and when I can expect to get it.

If you knew he was going to ship USPS from the auction, you shouldn't be complaining. USPS doesn't provide the type of tracking info that Fedex or UPS does.

I would ask him for a copy of the receipt and go to the Post Office with it. See if they can find it.
To answer your question, normal people would ask for a tracking number.

If you paid via paypal I'm pretty sure you're safe. If he cant prove you received it the money goes back to you.

Did you pay via paypal? If you did and it doesn't show up its on him to prove he shipped it. He has to provide a tracking number to paypal since he cant you should get your money back hopeing you paid that way.

I thought that the seller was responsible until the item arrived to the buyer. He hired the post office to take the computer to you. No different, IMO, than if he was driving it to you himself. His choice to use the USPS.

How did you pay? I'd start calling my CC company if it doesn't arrive soon.

Edit: And he's and idiot for not getting a tracking number. That's his responsibility, too, as is getting insurance.

I ordered a dreamcast from a guy a few years ago. It took 1 month to get here because they had the wrong zip code somehow (the guy didn't mess up, the post office sent it to the wrong zip)...so it had to go from CA to TN to CA to TN and probably sat around for a long time before they did anything about it. Hang in there.....USPS is the cheapest way to ship packages for a reason.

a lot of the time, you need to explicitly state that you want to add the insurance fee on the item, as well as delivery confirmation. you can pay for basic shipping, but that may not do anything for you. given that information, it is questionable who is really responsible.

if you were the buyer, you should have verified that it was going to be shipped with insurance and delivery confirmation. if you were the seller, you should have told the buyer that it would be shipped as such to avoid any possible confusion.

yes, he is responsible, and if you paid via Paypal, i'm willing to bet you get your money back. i just went thru that myself recently, i bought MS SQL Server off ebay and i never got it, he didn't have tracking info and paypal refunded me.

Overall tone of the email suggests to me that he's scamming, but I'm a cynical bastard so maybe that's just me. Good luck to you -- hope it works out.

I'd say if yo paid using PayPal, you can get your money back. If he doesn't have proof of shipping, they will give you your money back.

It can take up to 9 days to get it though USPS. If you don't get it within 14 days, he's responsible for not using a trackable shipping method. I've been through this before and the seller always loses.

The good news: if he can't prove he shipped it to you, you win.
The bad news: you'll need to wait a week or two from the supposed ship date before it would be reasonable of you to file a claim.

My limited experience on Ebay is that most sellers don't provide insurance unless you pay extra for it.

How many times does this have to be repeated? USPS DOES NOT provide tracking, they provide DELIVERY CONFIRMATION! For $0.45 you can purchase DC and HOPE that it gets into the system. The last DC i bought never showed up in their system. The buyer was kind enough to let me know it had arrived.

The seller is responsible for getting the item to you. Only a fool would fail to purchase both DC and insurance for something as expensive as a laptop.

Enough said
