Botting to a CF Card

Im building a comp for the AV Rack our church has, an I wanted to use a CF card for the boot drive, and a removable HDD for storing Audio, mainly to reduce heat.

So just how do you do this?

Thanks,

not sure how to BOOT from a CF card.. but most motherboards support booting from USB such as a USB thumb drive or USB floppy

I would worry about the choice of CPU/Case/Powersup/fans a LOT more then the heat/noise a second 5400rpm 1 platter boot drive will add.

If the thought of all that extra heat from a second desktop drive wigs you out get a laptop HDD and adapter cable.

It can be done, but it will be very slow. Booting your computer will be like watching grass grow. Expect 5-10 MB/s on a with avarage grade media.
Like GUNBUSTER Said Get a 5400rpm Drive- It will be faster than CF. Set the drives firmware to a low seek and access time for the quietest operation. I have a Hitachi 7k250 (7200rpm 8mb) and it is so quiet it's creepy! Get one they are fast too!

Thanks dudes

Ill proly end up gettin a ~4200 RPM NoteBook drive if i cant find a good or better standalone solution

CF card's transfer rate is very very very slow. I hope you like waiting 10 minutes for desktop to appear.

That's a lot better option. 2.5's run very quiet (especially Hitachis) and put out little heat.

NT based OS' cannot be installed onto removable media.

your best bet is to run win9x on a cf card.

go for a 5400rpm hd.

CF cards are already configured as IDE drives. Just use a suitable cable adaptor, and hook up to a PATA connector.

Then just format/install just like for a normal hard drive.

Adaptors are available from about $5. Just check out ebay - they're available by the hundred.
