hope you're not talking about industrial-strength lye :-o

Industrial strength? I've never really used it...does it come as a solid or solution? I wouldn't recommend adding a powder, but a few tablespoons of the solid in a liter or two of water should be a good concentration. Thioesters don't hydrolyze terribly easy IIRC, and as long as you wash of the lye well, it won't do much.

What exactly does skunk smell like?

Oh man it is so strong, my eyes were tearing last night. It is really a pungent funk. You never smelled it driving by a neighborhood? You probably have but did not know what you were smelling. They're pretty common.

We used the solution of peroxide, baking soda and dawn, twice. That was followed by a regular shampoo and conditioner for both dogs. They smell better but you can still smell the skunk on them. Thanks for all the help and advice and I will be ordering that goop stuff soon. I like goop products have used their hand degreaser before.

I think you ought to try heavy drinking. I've found that it is the solution to most problems.

My dog got sprayed a few years back. It was the most horrid thing I have ever smelled in my life. Not anything remotely close to what you smell when you drive by skunk roadkill. I thought I could deal with it, since I have no problem cleaning up vomit and feces and all the other fun stuff that comes with parenthood, but all I could do was gag. My wife had to clean the dog. Tomato juice didn't work worth shit, but the peroxide mixture did. You could still smell it faintly on the dog occasionally from that day forward, mostly when she got wet.
