they kinda failed at that because, without minority scholarships, many minorities would just be beaten at the scholarship game by rich white kids who've had a better education and upbringing. and if minorities can't get a helping hand to succeed and make something special of themselves, then people in their communities might not have more positive role models to help them want to achieve and not always feel like a victim of the system.

You do realize there are plenty of poor white kids too, right?

this is kinda like having a baseball player who openly takes steroids go to the hall of fame...

Case in post. They're trying to open up the eyes of people who think like you. I'm a white kid and I've gotten no special advantages over any of my minority friends. Most of them are better off than me. Go ahead and pull the "you don't realize the advantages you have" card, because obviously you know more about my life than me too with the great logical skills that've led you to believe that skin color determines one's success at life.

Yes, this is exactly the point, the scholarsphips whould be for poor people of ANY race. The problem is economics, NOT race.

Not according to eits. If white people are poor, it's their own fault. If black people are poor, it's still the white people's fault!

Then why not focus more on economic need rather than race when giving the scolarships?

Seems minorities would still have the most money awarded to them according to your figures.

i don't agree with giving minorities a scholarship just because they're minorities... i'm saying that there should be scholarships that are based on merit, yet are only available to certain minorities.

having scholarships based on income is good, too. they've got that up and running in virtually every state, i think. it's a good thing.

See, the deal is that rich white people are rich because they're good at stealing from minorities. Poor white people aren't as good at this form of thievery, so they deserve nothing.

I support this if the only consequence is the elimination of some racially based scholarships. It's absolutely ridiculous, why should being white have anything to do with your merit? Race should not determine whether you are deserving enough to receive financial aid. There are poor minorities with the skill to do well, but there are white kids in the same situation; no money, ability and will to achieve but no means to get off the ground.

Offer scholarships to EVERYONE based on MERIT.

I think that's the case for publicly funded scholarship...

but what if:

BET CEO wanted to give money to black students who excel?
Univision CEO wanted to give to latino students who excel?
Samsung CEO wanted to give to Korean students who excel?

People should give money to whomever they want. I think the point of the white scholarship was to create discussion that there's a double standard...

Perhaps because WASPs control most of the nations political, economic, and social power? Geeze. (And I am a WASP too - OMG!?!!??!?!)

I don't think many WASPs were barred entry into the nation's colleges up until 20 years ago....

You're title is inaccurate. The scholarship is being offered by BU College Republicans, not BU. Please fix it.

It's funny that they did it to make a point, but that point was only worth $250 to them. :D
