Boston - Possibly Relocating There

Basically I had a my whole scenario typed out about me possibly moving to Boston and accidently touched my touch pad as I was hitting backspace and lost it all. So I will shorten and leave out all of the boring details!

I am going to Boston in a week and a half for a job interview with a company that seems pretty interested in hiring me, but just wants to meet me in person and finalize a few things first. I am a little scared and confused right now because I am married, have two kids and have lived in the Kansas City area my whole life. I think I'll enjoy the job more than my current job, but financially it's not going to be much of a gain after taking into consideration the 45% cost of living increase.

Questions:

1) Has anyone been faced with a similar situation that required a move to a totally different part of the country?
1a) Do you regret making the move, or if you didn't move do you regret at least not taking the chance?
1b) If you did make the move was it a big cost of living increase? How did you adjust to that, and do you think the cost of living calculators are correct?

2) What do you guys/girls think about the Boston area? If you live there do you love it and would never consider moving? Do you live there but think it's just a place to live and you could be just as happy anywhere? Do you live somewhere else and would never consider moving to Boston, or do you live somewhere else but would really consider moving to Boston if you had the chance?

Also I would be interested in hearing anyone elses opinion's on cost of living calculators. While I think they may portray what the increases are on average, from what I see is they have flaws. I think they are based on a lot of averages and probably on average income, but they basically use the same percentage across the board no matter what you put in for your salary. For example would someone making $20,000 only need to make an extra 9000 per year in Boston to live the same while a person making 100,000 in KC needs to pull in 45000 more?

Thanks for any replys or comments!

I moved to Boston last November after graduating from college. I live alone in an apartment I rent just north of the city (PM if you want specifics)

My rent is absolutely ridiculous, about $1300 per month. I didn't know anybody when I moved in here, but now I have a bunch of friends and we are looking to rent a house which will cut my rent down to about $800 before utilities

Cost of Living in Boston is pretty crazy as well. I moved from a relatively small town in PA and could take $20 and have a GREAT night out on the town. Now when I go out it costs $70+. It makes it hard to save money.

As for adjusting, I'm sure that you'll get used to it in time. My salary here was significantly higher than other job offers, but I guess if you did a COLA they would equal out.

I don?t regret moving since I always wanted to live near a big city; however I am relatively young (22) and single. Because there are so many colleges around, there is a high population of young people, which is nice.

Boston as a town is awesome. There are tons of things to do and see, and great places to eat. The prices are just a bit of a shock.

well, it's Boston.

even if the cost of living sucks, the general scuminess of the city will cause you to take your own life after a few weeks anyways 😛 jk
