It's tradition. The parquet floor dates back to the 1940's. (1946 in what is now Northeastern University's Mathew's Arena according to Wikipedia.) Part of it was the floor the Celtics played on for 50 years in the old Boston Garden, and was moved to their current home, TD Banknorth Garden. It's been repaired, rebuilt and renovated over the years though the style has not changed.

According to wikipedia, the Orlando Magic also play on a parquet floor in Amway Arena.
