Seriously, I've known some good bosses, who taught, lead and developed people. But yet, I've known others, who were clearly on a power trip, from some inherent power that was suddenly bestowed upon them. Tell us about your boss. What kind of manager is he / she?
 
I'll have to stop laughing before I seriously answer your question.

edit: ok seriously though. my current boss wouldn't know his ass from his keyboard. There are just too many things that I have to shake my head at everyday.
 
my current bosses are the classic "do as we say, not as we do" type.

they're nice guys, but they come late every day and leave early, perfecting the art of the 5 hour work day, not to mention totally trashing the data center at times and dropping the ball on huge issues leaving the grunts in the department left to pick up the slack.

the big issue I have with them though is that they'll ignore absolutely any issue or problem until is escalates to the point where their boss says something about it. totally afraid of confrontation (sp) and as a result, let people in the department get away with murder.

I thought I was pretty good back in the days where I was a manager. I expected a lot from the people who worked under me and could be pretty hard on them, but I made sure that I worked just as hard as I expected them to and tried to always be the last person out the door at the end of the day.
 
Why you laughing dude? Ok, I thought about it, and frankly, some of my past bosses have been like the 3 stooges, but with only one of them, so they tried to make everyone else look like the "stooges" 😀

OMG, do we work in the same place? That is EXACTLY what it is like here, and I even work in a data center.
 
I had a boss who complained we were making too much money! He owned a gas station, and I did smog tests on cars. He had about 87% of the entire area's smog test business due to him being right next to DMV. He made 7.50 a test, we got 3.50 and the state got 2.00.

His whining about us making too much money used to crack us up. I made over 4k in one month, and the boss cried I wasn't trying to sell enough "accessories". He made more on the smog tests (It only took 10-15 minutes to get one done, and there were 3 of us doing them. I did like 80 in one day, one guy did 75 or, and the one guy stayed through lunch and did over 100.

The boss still whined..

What a moron...
 
well, i have a temp manager who seems very assertive & pushy... OVER EMAIL... he has a 100% different personality for "IRL" encounters...

my regular manager, who is back soon, is very personable, professional, and although she is not a leader per se - she does inspire the best out of the staff here. especially now that mr. temp has had his run-ins with everyone... we really appreciate her returning. one of the things she does that cannot be undervalued in a working environment is let you know when you're doing a good job. unlike the other guy, who you wouldn't hear from unless you've done something wrong or been 1 minute late a couple times a week.
 
So far, I've had the pleasure of having both respectable and hardworking bosses. They seem to be in meetings practically all day every day. They've always lent a helping hand whenever I needed it and gave me constructive criticism. For that, I respect them...

A quote from my boss the day after he hired me: "yeah, if you ever get too drunk and have a hangover on a monday morning, just let me know and i'll take care of it" 😀

...however, who knows what goes on behind those closed doors in their meetings... 😉

Duh! Non face-2-face firing sucks... at least E-Mail is the 2nd worst way...(after recognizing your key card is not working anymore one morning...)

Edit: To you people who have E-mail assertive bosses. The next time you see them why don't you tell them you'd prefer to handle matters such as that in person.
 
My present boss is the smartest guy I personally know. We went to the same school and took the same classes however, he is much much smarter than me.

No kidding. If I had to deal with that, I'd just print the email off and take it to the sender to discuss it. It's easy:

"Hey, I received your email and thought I'd come to you to see if you wanted to discuss it further."

"Huh? Oh... that? Uh... well, uh... I was just kidding HAHAHa... say, why don't you take the rest of the day off!"

Fortunately for me, I've had the pleasure of working for great bosses. I've worked for my current boss at two different companies. He's a great leader. He's a very reasonable guy who sincerely cares about the people working for him.

The president of the company is the same way (who also worked at the previous company as president).

I really admire both of these people and thoroughly enjoy working for them.
 
I play boss at work and I already know how most of the people feel about me, but they're negative attitude stems from laziness. I'm the only manager of my area that makes them work. All of my sub-supervisors let them get away with murder and they second I crack down, they all start crying.

Sounds like you need to start cracking down on the supervisors.
 
Management by absence.

Three words that descibe the situation here. He's clueless and sucks in general. He bends over backwards to please other groups while we don't get any support.

I have only ever had 1 boss that was a great leader. It was for no more than 3 years, but he really helped me grow as a person and as a future leader myself.
 
I've never had a boss that had any clue wbout WTF they were doing. We end up doing all the work and the boss takes the credit or passes on information like they came up with it.
