Bosses and their decisions

Czar

Lifer
Here at work the latest hot topic from the bosses is that everyone should turn their computers off after work but they havent given us employees any reasons for this. Or the reason they have given is to save electricity, but thats not what I hear from they themselves, just second hand information which could be true or not. And as far as I know no studdy has been done to check how much is saved by this.

Should they give a logical reason for their decisions or should everyone just listen and do as they say?

You will save 100% of the energy used if left on when you turn them off. No reason to be wasteful. Turn them off.

Hmm they just put the same rule into affect at the company I work for...VoNaGe. I was going to say some things about the crap we have to deal with, but i'll wait until I land a new job..

and to add to this, as some might know I live in iceland and we have some of the cheapest electicity in the world, so cheap that if our connection to the internet was more stable international companies would host huge datacenters here

Oh. It's cheap. So we should just mindlessly waste it.

I'm saying if its cheap and the company is at that point to have to save there then I'm starting to worry about our financial situation

Since they are the boss, they are in charge and they tell you what to do.

If they want the computers off and there isn't a good reason to keep them on (which if there is, bring it to their attention), then turn them off. They don't need to justify themselves (although it keeps people happy when they are kept in the loop about why things are the way they are).

There is no point in wasting power.

Why is it that big of a deal to you? Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic. Is their a reason you NEED to leave your PC on? If not, why not just do what they ask. They do after all pay the bills.

How do you like it in Iceland? My fathers side of the family came from there and I'm very interested in going to visit.

QFT

Wasting power is like making a pie and then just throwing it out in the trash.

there is another reason, why some are veeery unhappy about this

Recently we moved, so with the new place the time system was reevaluated. So now instead of walking to the clock at the entrance each morning and swipe our cards we have to turn on our computers, wait for it to boot, login and then go to a webpage where we log in, and at that time we have officialy started working.

So by leaving it on you can circumvent them knowing when you're there? Is that what you mean?

no, so that when I clock myself in when I come to work, not 5 minutes after I get to work

I have to clock myself out after work

well if they have stuff that needs to run overnight, then they have a legit reason to leave it on. sounds like they are just taking this whole thing out of context or just want to b!tch about something.

Turning off a computer is important for security reasons. If they're on a network, it can help prevent a virus outbreak. It also keeps hackers or curious employees from getting into your file system.

not that it needs to be run over night, just that starting them all up again every morning is a bitch, or so they say
