I guess we'll be playing soccer (football for you UK people) in 12 inches of sand, and we have to be barefoot.

I'm worried about breaking or jamming my toes- do you normally tape them up or anything when playing this way?

I wouldn't be as worried about my toes as digging my foot in and twisting an ankle or something. Soccer is an intense game as it is, putting yourself in a sandpit seems like a hell of a workout.

Just do what the professionals do: every time another player gets near you fall on the ground, hold your knee and cry like a baby. You should be able to go the entire season without ever having to touch the ball.

You don't need to, the sand will (re: should) be fairly loose so unless you dig in very deep you'll be ok. You can tape up your ankles and/or top of foot to give you some protection if you wish.

This is a sport that started in Brazil so of course it is most popular there. Because of the loose sand, people get so tired so quick, so they aren't very aggressive and there aren't as many injuries. Also the fields tend to be small, usually 3 vs 3 or 5 vs 5. The teams that win are the teams with the most stamina, then those that pass the most.

When I play at the beach, I usually stub my toe, and the worst that's happened is a chipped toenail... Trust me, it might sting for a bit, but it's not gonna keep you from playing. It's fun as hell. Enjoy yourself.

Just don't tackle like a bitch and you won't get hurt.

Brazil is partly down the poor environment and partly the likes of futsal, which many technically gifted nations play regularly (re: not England!!). :)

Yeah, unless he plays regularly, he's definitely gonna feel it all over his body. Ass and legs the worst.

I never played officially but we used to do this while goofing off waiting for our beach volleyball tourney's. Depending on the sand depth and moisture, it's extremely taxing on the legs. Make sure you know how to properly kick, dribble, pass using top and sides of your foot...

I thought you were talking about the game crab soccer that we used to play in gym class in elementary school

I was wondering why your boss is in a crab soccer league

Sounds like the perfect environment for getting an eyeful of sand.

There's a reason why many beach volleyball players wear wrap around style shades. It's not just the sun.

Didn't some relatively major athlete miss an entire season after getting injured playing this game a little while back?

It just sounds dangerous to me, there is too much give in the sand. My legs would be twisted every which way and I know I'd end up hurting something.

Well first off, shouldn't be any danger of hurting your toes as you don't kick with your toes, you use the top of your foot.

However, I've never played in the sand so i have no idea what to expect as far as that goes. I'm sure the wild kick will happen and toes will break or get dislocated.

Still sounds like fun though.
