Boss is ignoring my already approved vacation request

Most of you will probably think it's stupid, but this is the biggest vacation I've ever planned and my boss is coming between it.

So I have a huge trip planned for Hawaii (2 1/2 weeks off in December) that I already bought plane tickets for with my girlfriend. The boss approved the time off, and I have email proof and a screenshot from corporate of the time off being approved in the system, however, when i email him about it, he just ignores my emails and when I ask to get his approval again for verification just to make sure he basically shrugs it off.

So your opinion... I've never had this happen before with vacation time from him. It's probably because it's 2 1/2 weeks straight. Should I just email the night before I leave, saying "Vacation reminder" to him replying back to the email of him approving it earlier? Then if he replies saying no and it's after 5PM, I'm technically not required to reply. :) Sneaky but it'd work since I have email and proof from corporate, I can't be fired for it.

Otherwise, if I ask about it a week before I leave, I bet anything he'll say it will then be denied. He's just that kind of boss, yeah, a real a-hole. He does this to everybody on our team with time off off and on.

Thankfully the only cost I'd have to eat is the plane ticket, because I have a free place to stay out there.

/end rant.

:(

If its already approved stop asking. Just don;t show for those days and keep print outs just in case (CYA).

What do you mean he "shrugs it off"? Maybe he's just confused because you're repeatedly asking him for approval for a vacation he already approved? If you feel you need more approval than that, ask him to his face and don't let him out of the conversation until he reaffirms his approval.

Or instead of asking for another approval, ask him if he wants you to do anything in preparation for your vacation, i.e. create a document to guide whomever is going to cover your responsibilities for those days.

this. if you already have proof he approved it, screw him. barring any issues at work that actually REQUIRE you to fix/ work on, i cant see any good reason to not go.

We had a re-org at work. He will no longer be my boss come Jan 1st. I just want to verify the vacation time due to company changes, we changed everything around here.... but yes... I guess I'll just leave it alone.

So he can approve PTO, then later deny the same request on his own whim? You need to find new employment.

If it`s already aproved he has to tell you he is canceling your holiday and in this case he would be liable to reemburse your penalty cost incured by cancelling your travel arangements.

Basically if he doesn't mention it, GO and have a good time.

PS: if you can`t go I might be able to substitute for you. Send me a pic of your girlfriend and ill make a decision.

If it's approved it's approved. No need for reapproval, especially since he won't even be your boss after your vacation ends. If he really is an a-hole he probably doesn't care about your reapproval requests for this reason.

Maybe that's why he's ignoring you. He just doesn't care. Leave it alone and go have fun on your vacation since it's already approved time off and you have the proof as backup.

Stop bothering your boss, if it's approved, it's approved. If I was the boss, I would be pissed of some underling kept bragging about his trip to Hawaii to me after I already approved it since I'm still stuck at work.

He has his own Hawaii like trip in December, I don't think he's jealous. :) He'll be gone as well.

So it's all settled, I'm leaving it be!

End thread.

Lock 'er up.

Thanks...

If you already have approval don't ask for re-approval. If anything, just send a reminder email a week or so before hand saying that per previous approval you will be out of the office between such and such a date. As others have mentioned, constantly asking about something when you've already been given an answer is annoying as hell.

No. We are not done berating you.

IF IT'S ALREADY BEEN APPROVED, WHY ARE YOU BOTHERING YOUR BOSS FOR A SECOND APPROVAL? HE'S PROBABLY NOT ANSWERING BECAUSE YOU ARE ANNOYING HIM.

Ugh - I had an employee that would do that, and it was irritating as hell.

You notified him. Make sure your out of office is setup and phone is either fwd'd to another employee or has an appropriate message. Tie up any loose ends project wise, and send him an email in the afternoon on the day before your vacation letting him know your DND is set, VM is set, projects are wrapped up, and your contact info (if this is appropriate) in the case of an emergency.

I'm not sure I would have given it a second thought .. until, perhaps, I was hanging out on the beach in Hawaii.
