I'm looking to get a distortion pedal to go with my Carvin SX-100D. The overdrive, even when maxed, doesn't seem to be quite distorted enough as it was on my Peavey. Some songs it is adequate and others it could use a little more. So the guy who sold me this amp offered to let me try out his DS-2 dist pedal he no longer uses as well. I've been playing it for two days and am pretty impressed. With an included generic footswitch to switch between Modes 1 and 2 on the pedal, he offers it for $40. Brand new it is $80 it appears.

I'm not sure how much better the DS-2 is over the DS-1, which is only $40 new. I've checked HarmonyCentral reviews and its rated pretty well. I'm not too worried about it being used since Boss pedals are so reliable and the guy takes good care of his equipment. I'm guessing the pedal is around 4 years old. The Carvin amp he sold me is 5 years old and I'm sure will last another 5 until electronics on it just start wearing out due to regular use.

I mostly play punk but also some metal like CKY and Incubus as well as alt rock and Nirvana. I don't intend to get into hardcore metal so the cons I read of it being not quite a MetalZone or whatnot don't concern me. If anything I'll get into playing lighter stuff like some oldies. But I hear you need a tube amp for the full effect there.

Anyway, from the reviews I seen, its everything the DS-1 is but more (the two modes are pretty neat: one for rythm, one for lead). The fact that's its used probably doesn't weigh in much considering its still of good quality and likely won't break. Finally the reviews seem to point it out as one of the best possible pedals for what kind of music I want to play without spending $100+ on one.

So, sound like a good idea or no? Is there any way at all I could find a better deal/a better pedal for the same price? I'm thinking no but clue me in if there is.

Also, there is no AC-DC adapter for it, so it will be running off 9 V unless I want to spend $20 for one off Ebay. Do the 9V last long enough? I only play maybe 1 hr a day every other day. I'm thinking that'd be a lot of 9 V batteries before I reached $20.

I have a DS-1 and I love it (playing a '89 Fender HM Strat into an '84 JCM 800 amp), although I do wish I had gotten a DS-2 instead. $40 for a DS-2 is a pretty good price. It's a great pedal with great tone.

You don't necessarily need a tube amp to get full effect, but it will certainly warm up the tone. With my previous amp, a little 15 watt solid state, it sounded pretty good but not great. Kinda cold sounding. When I got my JCM 800 amp it really sounded much better. Either way though you can't go wrong.

The DS-1/2 IS the sound of Nirvana when cranked, if that's what you're looking for there really is no other pedal.

It's also great for some punk and classic rock when the distortion is turned down.

As far as batteries, it probably will last you about 8 hrs, maybe more. I'd spend the $20 and just get the AC adapter. If you accidently leave the pedal on with batteries overnight, you've just wasted them. Atleast with the AC adapter you have nothing to worry about.
